The Nyungar Aboriginal peoples knew Claremont as a place of plentiful spring water, good fishing and abundant waterfowl. The British felt almost at home - its gently undulating landscape mirrored in the clear waters of the Swan River.

In 1830, John Butler, recently arrived from Liverpool, speculated on its commercial qualities. It was at Freshwater Bay, halfway between Perth and Fremantle, that he set up his inn, attracting travellers on the road connecting the two anchor communities of the Swan River Colony.

From these humble beginnings Claremont quickly established itself into one of the most well recognized suburbs of Perth, Western Australia, whilst maintaining its village atmosphere.

Claremont is an area of almost five square kilometres and is nestled around Freshwater Bay on the Swan River, in the midst of beautiful parks with an abundance of mature trees. It is an attractive and sought after residential suburb, noted for its village atmosphere, shopping and entertainment precinct, educational establishment and facilities such as golf, swimming and yachting.

Claremont is a dynamic place, only a leisurely 10-minute drive south west of Perth CBD. Close to the acclaimed Cottesloe Beach, Claremont is an upmarket area with very stylish buildings, houses and people. There is a has a fun and active ambience.

Claremont is an attractive and sought after residential area that covers around 5 square kilometres on the riverbank. Predominantly, the luxury is surrounded by beautiful parklands and an air of nature that most city suburbs lack.

Freshwater Bay is one of the most spectacular areas of the Swan River, with its open water, beaches, steep vegetated slopes and cliffs. The area has significant conservation, landscape and particular heritage values, but is also subject to heavy pressure for residential, institutional and recreational use.

The Rowe Park tennis courts are available Monday to Saturday 8am – 8pm, Sunday 9am – 8pm.

The two courts are located within the park, which has plenty of space for children to run around, a children’s playground and also a tennis hit-up wall and basketball ring.

Cottesloe Beach - a safe swimming beach although strong currents can develop near the groyne.

Swanbourne Beach - usually a safe beach for swimming, and well known in Perth as a nudist beach.

Part of the Sunset Coast's appeal is the relaxed atmosphere it provides to visitors. Within walking distance from the beaches, there are a number of cafes to choose from, and many offer alfresco style dining, which is perfect for the Perth summer climate.
