As a summer or winter retreat, the award winning Silver Street Studio and residence is a very special place. This spacious, private, hideaway is a two story, stand- alone building hidden behind high limestone walls. It is close to the culinary hub of South Fremantle yet quiet, very secluded and has an ambience which is hard to beat. This charming space is the perfect place in which to relax, to escape the pressures of contemporary living, whilst being within instant reach of all facilities, the sea, and everything Fremantle has on offer.

Originally built as an artist's studio and gallery, 'Silver Street' has now been thoughtfully converted into a wonderfully creative, comfortable and eclectic residence. Constructed from large local limestone blocks rescued from a former Fremantle church, magnificent one hundred year old timbers from 'Rob's' (South Fremantle) Jetty, and other fascinating items of memorabilia, including a turret, from the old Swanbourne Hospital. The building speaks to local history, contemporary art and old world charm.

On arrival, our guests enter the property through a small wooden door within a 'medieval' gate. Ivy trails over high limestone walls which seclude a lush courtyard garden. In summer, this area is shaded by a plane tree, a poinciana, palms, an olive tree, a weeping mulberry and a grape vine. This is an ideal setting for a private breakfast, a leisurely lunch, and a romantic evening BBQ.

Huge glass doors connect this leafy outdoor area to the downstairs living space which is open plan - has a well equipped kitchen, a dining area and a comfortable lounge. The rugs and furnishings, together with the idiosyncratic architecture create a rich environment to be enjoyed.

The upper studio level, originally used for producing ceramics, is now reached internally via a sculptural steel staircase. The bedroom has a very comfortable queen size bed, supplied with best quality bedding and crisp white linen sheets. A small mezzanine connects to the bathroom/dressing room. This upstairs space opens onto a north facing balcony which provides a lovely 'open air' spot for a sumptuous bath under the stars (see image). The former kiln room, to the left of the balcony, has been converted into a peaceful reading/meditation space and occasional spare bedroom. This northern balcony can also be reached via a limestone stairwell connecting to the courtyard below.

A downstairs store room houses two mountain bikes which can be made available to guests on request.

On arrival we give you a bottle of fine Western Australian Vasse Felix wine, locally grown macadamia nuts, chocolates, flowers, Margaret River cheese, plus a delicious welcome hamper for your first morning and beyond. Besides a selection of beautiful fresh fruits, the hamper contains locally made jam, WA roasted coffee beans, gourmet teas, home-made muesli, free range eggs and freshly baked bread from our local bakery just at the end of the street and more.

An extra single bed can be made available on request for one extra adult and/or a cot is available for a small baby. However, the building is fairly open plan and we primarily see the Silver Street Studio as a romantic retreat for couples.

Please note this accommodation is not suitable for active toddlers, children, the very frail or fainthearted. It is a unique, wonderfully eclectic, idiosyncratic, space that truly rewards the romantic adventurer, and those with creative spirit who want something beyond, and quite different from, the usual.

This well known icon has a fascinating history which weaves together and extends many a local story.

A superb location:

Silver Street Studio is private, yet in the heart of South Fremantle's culinary hub. We are close to a variety of great local eateries, cafés, fresh food outlets, galleries, transport and all facilities. Nearby cafés include Ootong and Lincoln just at the end of our little street, Manna Wholefoods for the health conscious , Abbis, the ever popular Swiss bakery with coffee shop, and more - all within 100 metres or so. For those who want to be 'renewed', there is a beauty / massage centre close by and yoga just across the road to help with the final unwind.

We are just two hundred metres from the Yacht Club, Fishing Boat Harbour and within easy reach of both South Beach and Central Fremantle.

You won't need a car to travel around town. Everything is walkable. However, if you choose not to walk, the free CAT bus service does run every ten minutes from the end of the road, taking a circular route around Fremantle via various sites of historic interest, also stopping at the railway station for those wishing to travel into the centre of Perth. But why not borrow our two mountain bikes and explore Fremantle: take a picnic, follow the many cycle tracks to quiet beaches through the coastal heath-lands.

Fremantle holiday attractions and historic sites:

Enjoy the beach and a range of available water sports: the cafe life, art galleries and other local attractions. These include the WA Maritime Museum, The Shipwreck Gallery, Fishing Boat Harbour, the Round House, Bather's Beach Art Precinct, the World Heritage listed Fremantle Jail with its convict built underground canal system, Fremantle Markets, the Fremantle Arts Centre (the former convict built asylum) and many wonderful local eateries. There are many day trips available and regular ferries leaving for Rottnest Island, local fishing spots, and whale watching areas. These can all be booked through the Tourist Office. Fremantle also has a vibrant night life.

You can of course, just sit at 'home', listen to music, watch TV/a DVD, play chess or find a really good 'read' from our excellent selection of books - and relax.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Magical Mystical Tour What a heart-warming experience! My partner and I felt as though we were drawn into a mythical paradise when we were welcomed through the hobbit gate into Silver Street Studio. We both knew from the photos that it was special but I am overjoyed to say that the studio is much more than we expected. The feeling of warmth and comfort is the first thing we noticed. We both felt right at home when we walked in. We could tell straight away this was the right decision. We wanted something a bit different from the generic hotel stay. What we got was a journey into the rustic past with a strong spiritual/artistic flavour combined with all the modern conveniences of a fully equipped kitchen. This studio brought Fremantle alive for us in ways we couldn't imagine. We felt that the atmosphere and surroundings were so wonderful that we were content to stay in and cook for ourselves rather than go out at night. We also loved having breakfast overlooking the lush courtyard. I am a seasoned traveller and this studio made for one of the best experiences I have ever enjoyed in my travels. We loved every minute in the studio.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unique and Delightful We have just had a wonderful early December stay for five nights at Silver St. The property is exactly as described and very, very special. We loved the leafy courtyard and the outdoor bath on the secluded balcony- very romantic. The owners are extremely kind and welcoming; they are committed to helping guests make the most of the Fremantle area and have included so many thoughtful touches in preparing the studio for visitors. The nearby beach is gorgeous, it's just a ten minute easy stroll into central Fremantle, and you have your own private, magical place to retreat to, with a superbly comfy bed. The toilet is accessed via an undercover, outdoor area, but this did not bother us at all- the owners are very honest about the property suiting those lucky enough to be agile, as there are curvy staircases etc. This all adds to the amazing charm and I really should not be writing this review, as it might be better to keep this absolute gem a secret!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Romance of a lifetime Yes you have to bring the love, the passion and the sense of fun yourself but Silver Street Studio is the perfect setting for two lovers to paint the story of their passion, to sculpt their love and draw their bath on the external balcony. What more can one say about such a romantic setting other than: prepare to spend a lot of time there - you will love it too!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WONDERFUL RETREAT WITH ALL THE CONVENINCE Such a beautiful place to stay, do not be put off by the word Studio, it is very spacious and light filled relaxing environment. Love the complimentary "Welcome Hamper" with local produce and fine foods, this is such a treat after a long journey. All the conveniences you require for a business or holiday trip in beautiful surroundings - great artwork, courtyard garden and plenty of books and magazine to read while relaxing in a big armchair or soft sofa. Great local Cafes and shops are just out of the front door on South Terrace and about a 5- 10 minute walk to central Fremantle and markets. Will definitely try to get back to Silver St Studio for a long relaxing holiday soon!
