As a summer and winter retreat, the award winning Silver Street Studio is something completely different, and very special. This private, spacious, two story hideaway is close to the heart of South Fremantle's 'hip' culinary hub- and it is also in a really great quiet location. Secluded behind high limestone walls within a lush courtyard garden, the Studio is the romantic' dream and has an ambient charm which is hard to beat. It is the perfect place in which to relax, escape the pressures of contemporary living, whilst being within instant reach of all facilities, the sea, and everything Fremantle has on offer.
Originally built as an artist's studio and gallery, 'Silver Street Studio' has now been thoughtfully converted into a wonderfully creative, comfortable and eclectic residence. Constructed from large local limestone blocks rescued from a former Fremantle church, magnificent one hundred year old timbers from 'Rob's' South Fremantle Jetty, and other fascinating items of memorabilia including a turret from the old Swanbourne Hospital, the building speaks to local history, contemporary art, interior design and old world charm.
On arrival, our guests enter into the courtyard through a small 'hobbit' door within a 'medieval' gate. In summer, this area is shaded by a plane tree, a poinciana, palms, an olive tree, a weeping mulberry and grape vine. This alfresco area also makes an ideal setting for a private breakfast, a leisurely lunch, or a romantic evening BBQ.
Huge glass doors connect the leafy outdoor area to the open-plan downstairs living space. There is a well equipped kitchen, dining area and very comfortable lounge. Beautiful rugs, art works and eclectic furnishings, together with an idiosyncratic architectural style create a rich, warm environment to be enjoyed.
The upper studio level, originally used for producing ceramics, is now reached internally via a stylish industrial staircase. The bedroom has a very comfortable queen size bed, supplied with quality bedding and white laundered, linen, sheets. A small mezzanine walkway connects this space to the bathroom/dressing room opens onto a north facing balcony providing a lovely 'open air' spot for a sumptuous bath under the stars see image. The former kiln room, to the left of this balcony, has been converted into a peaceful reading/meditation space and an occasional spare bedroom in summer.
A downstairs store room houses two mountain bikes which are available for our guests to use.
On arrival we give you a bottle of fine Vasse Felix 'red' and Margaret River cheeses, plus a delicious hamper for your first morning and beyond....Besides a selection of beautiful fresh fruits, the hamper contains locally made jams, WA roasted coffee beans, gourmet teas, home-made muesli, free range eggs and freshly baked bread from our local bakery at the end of the street..and more.
An extra single bed can be made available on request for one extra adult and/or a cot is available for a small baby. However, the building is fairly open plan and we primarily see the Silver Street Studio as a romantic retreat for couples.
Please note this accommodation is not suitable for active toddlers, children, the very frail or fainthearted. It is a unique, wonderfully eclectic, idiosyncratic, space that truly rewards the adventurer, and those with creative spirit who want something beyond, and quite different from 'the norm'.
We are in an enviable location near great cafés and all facilities; just two hundred metres from the Yacht Club, Fishing Boat Harbour and within easy reach of both South Beach and Central Fremantle.
You won't need a car to travel around town. Everything is walkable. However, if you choose not to walk or take the bikes, the free CAT bus service does run every ten minutes from the end of the road, taking a circular route around Fremantle via various sites of historic interest, also stopping at the railway station for those wishing to travel into the centre of Perth. But why not take a picnic, follow the many cycle tracks to quiet beaches along the coastal heath-lands
