As a summer or winter retreat, the award winning Silver Street Studio and residence is a very special place. This spacious, private, hideaway is a two story, stand- alone building hidden behind high limestone walls. It is close to the culinary hub of South Fremantle yet quiet, very secluded and has an ambience which is hard to beat. This charming space is the perfect place in which to relax, to escape the pressures of contemporary living, whilst being within instant reach of all facilities, the sea, and everything Fremantle has on offer.
Originally built as an artist's studio and gallery, 'Silver Street' has now been thoughtfully converted into a wonderfully creative, comfortable and eclectic residence. Constructed from large local limestone blocks rescued from a former Fremantle church, magnificent one hundred year old timbers from 'Rob's' (South Fremantle) Jetty, and other fascinating items of memorabilia, including a turret, from the old Swanbourne Hospital. The building speaks to local history, contemporary art and old world charm.
On arrival, our guests enter the property through a small wooden door within a 'medieval' gate. Ivy trails over high limestone walls which seclude a lush courtyard garden. In summer, this area is shaded by a plane tree, a poinciana, palms, an olive tree, a weeping mulberry and a grape vine. This is an ideal setting for a private breakfast, a leisurely lunch, and a romantic evening BBQ.
Huge glass doors connect this leafy outdoor area to the downstairs living space which is open plan - has a well equipped kitchen, a dining area and a comfortable lounge. The rugs and furnishings, together with the idiosyncratic architecture create a rich environment to be enjoyed.
The upper studio level, originally used for producing ceramics, is now reached internally via a sculptural steel staircase. The bedroom has a very comfortable queen size bed, supplied with best quality bedding and crisp white linen sheets. A small mezzanine connects to the bathroom/dressing room. This upstairs space opens onto a north facing balcony which provides a lovely 'open air' spot for a sumptuous bath under the stars (see image). The former kiln room, to the left of the balcony, has been converted into a peaceful reading/meditation space and occasional spare bedroom. This northern balcony can also be reached via a limestone stairwell connecting to the courtyard below.
A downstairs store room houses two mountain bikes which can be made available to guests on request.
On arrival we give you a bottle of fine Western Australian Vasse Felix wine, locally grown macadamia nuts, chocolates, flowers, Margaret River cheese, plus a delicious welcome hamper for your first morning and beyond. Besides a selection of beautiful fresh fruits, the hamper contains locally made jam, WA roasted coffee beans, gourmet teas, home-made muesli, free range eggs and freshly baked bread from our local bakery just at the end of the street and more.
An extra single bed can be made available on request for one extra adult and/or a cot is available for a small baby. However, the building is fairly open plan and we primarily see the Silver Street Studio as a romantic retreat for couples.
Please note this accommodation is not suitable for active toddlers, children, the very frail or fainthearted. It is a unique, wonderfully eclectic, idiosyncratic, space that truly rewards the romantic adventurer, and those with creative spirit who want something beyond, and quite different from, the usual.
This well known icon has a fascinating history which weaves together and extends many a local story.
A superb location:
Silver Street Studio is private, yet in the heart of South Fremantle's culinary hub. We are close to a variety of great local eateries, cafés, fresh food outlets, galleries, transport and all facilities. Nearby cafés include Ootong and Lincoln just at the end of our little street, Manna Wholefoods for the health conscious , Abbis, the ever popular Swiss bakery with coffee shop, and more - all within 100 metres or so. For those who want to be 'renewed', there is a beauty / massage centre close by and yoga just across the road to help with the final unwind.
We are just two hundred metres from the Yacht Club, Fishing Boat Harbour and within easy reach of both South Beach and Central Fremantle.
You won't need a car to travel around town. Everything is walkable. However, if you choose not to walk, the free CAT bus service does run every ten minutes from the end of the road, taking a circular route around Fremantle via various sites of historic interest, also stopping at the railway station for those wishing to travel into the centre of Perth. But why not borrow our two mountain bikes and explore Fremantle: take a picnic, follow the many cycle tracks to quiet beaches through the coastal heath-lands.
Fremantle holiday attractions and historic sites:
Enjoy the beach and a range of available water sports: the cafe life, art galleries and other local attractions. These include the WA Maritime Museum, The Shipwreck Gallery, Fishing Boat Harbour, the Round House, Bather's Beach Art Precinct, the World Heritage listed Fremantle Jail with its convict built underground canal system, Fremantle Markets, the Fremantle Arts Centre (the former convict built asylum) and many wonderful local eateries. There are many day trips available and regular ferries leaving for Rottnest Island, local fishing spots, and whale watching areas. These can all be booked through the Tourist Office. Fremantle also has a vibrant night life.
You can of course, just sit at 'home', listen to music, watch TV/a DVD, play chess or find a really good 'read' from our excellent selection of books - and relax.
