Privacy, comfort and location: In an enviable position, this beautifully restored former 'fisherman's' cottage is situated in the most attractive, leafy corner of South Fremantle, opposite a small park and also brings a little bit of luxury to that special stay. Coral Street Cottage is less than 70 metres from South Fremantle's 'hip' culinary hub and only a short stroll to both South Beach and Central Fremantle.
The former front bedroom of the Cottage has now been converted into a lovely sitting room with 'Victorian' gas fire, stylish furniture, great library and TV set up. The now 'main' bedroom has a very comfortable queen-sized bed, a ceiling fan and a reverse cycle air conditioner. Occasionally, we make up an extra single bed in the front room for an extra adult or child.
The kitchen is a good size, well equipped with all modern facilities but still has the original wood stove in situ to show the passing of time.
A tasteful 1980's extension at the back with high ceilings adds unique character to this very special 1890's worker's cottage. The bathroom leads off to the right of this space, as do the laundry facilities. The back sitting/dining room has a beautiful bay window/reading nook and French doors which open onto a private 'Mediterranean' courtyard garden which boasts lemon, lime, guava, pomegranate and mulberry trees. This outside space makes for a delightful breakfast, lunch or barbecue dining area.
On arrival we give you with a complementary bottle of Vasse Felix, Margaret River 'red', cheeses, chocolates, flowers as well as a, generous welcome hamper for your first morning and way beyond.....
The Cottage is well equipped with best quality linen. We also supply swimming towels for those who enjoy the beach. The property is easy to care for, and would suit those either on holiday wanting a romantic getaway, or those wanting a comfortable retreat whilst here on business.
The deciduous trees allow plenty of shade in summer and light in winter. Although shaded and cool in summer, the cottage is also very cosy in the winter months and heated by a gas pot belly in the back sitting/dining room and an open gas 'Victorian' fireplace in the front TV/ sitting room.
Cafés and restaurants are just at the end of our tiny street. In the opposite direction, we are only a short stroll from the centre of Fremantle, Little Creatures and a selection of harbour restaurants, Bather's Beach, Notre Dame University, Fremantle Markets, the world heritage Fremantle Prison and the Round House. In a southerly direction, South Beach is a five minute walk away and a cycle and walking track leads to O'Connor Beach and beyond. For those who might need to take a bus, the free CAT bus service runs past the end of the road every 10 minutes and takes a circular route around town stopping at all points of interests.
South Fremantle has a good selection of restaurants, cafes and specialty shops. These include the Ootong and Lincoln cafe, a Swiss gourmet bakery, a small Italian supermarket, hair dressers, yoga centre, several gift shops, galleries.....and more...
From here, it is easy to enjoy the beach and a range of water sports, take the ferry to Rottnest Island, sail up the Swan River - explore Fremantle's historic sites and galleries.
Catch the CAT to Fremantle Arts Centre, have lunch on the lawns, see an exhibition and listen to court yard music on Sunday afternoons..
The main line station is also only a short walk away, or CAT bus ride, for those wishing to travel to Perth and beyond.......or, you can simply stay at 'home', enjoy the space, and listen to music, watch a DVD, or find an interesting read from our selection of books ......and relax.
Just a couple of reviews from our Web page
"Business Traveler Tired of Hotels, from Noosa".
"Rather than stay in the 'usual' Fremantle hotel, we opted for Coral Cottage this time. Our 6 day experience was as follows: At 5am we started the day with a sunrise jog along the beach side part followed by a swim with the local early risers at South Beach. We returned to the Cottage and delved into the basket of goodies, provided ....honey roasted almond muesli, local organic yoghurt and milk, WA roasted biodynamic coffee beans, seeded sourdough from the bakery across the street, fresh eggs, tomatoes, mangoes,....the list goes on.
Off to work by 7.30, the Cottage was an easy walk to Fremantle train station. Returning home in the evening, we were able to pause and appreciate the private, sunny, limestone encrusted courtyard, bottle of cold, crisp white wine and macadamias also part of the hamper provided.
South Fremantle beats Fremantle hands down when it comes to dining venues, lacking pretensions and devoid of 'bling'. Just great food.
Shower and don a fluffy bathrobe in the evening.....settle down in the cosy living room...and discover more goodies....prise winning books that could keep you reading for a year, local chocolate, an exhaustive selection of CDs.
I am hesitant to write such a positive review because I work in Fremantle and Perth frequently and I fear that the Cottage will become so popular that I will not be able to get a booking However, this property is so outstanding and the owners so engaging that I am compelled to speak.
A truly memorable experience for all the right reasons".
"Coral Cottage was the perfect place for myself and my beautiful wife to have the most romantic time and will always be an important place for us in both our lives and our hearts. Thanks Judy and Hugh for a setting for memories that are with us forever". Warren and Marie. Perth.
