Kallaroo might be Perthâs best kept secret. The tiny suburb, nestled between Hillarys and Mullaloo is often unknown, even to locals. This being said, Kallaroo has much to offer for relaxing family holidays.
The community is set amidst 17 km of beaches, with places for snorkelling, fishing and swimming. Kallaroo has its fair share of playgrounds, cafes and restaurants. The Perth suburb is just a stroll from Hillarys Marina, where day trips leave for Rottnest Island. A short drive away, you will find one of Australiaâs largest aquariums.
Holiday rentals in Kallaroo include spacious family homes and stylish apartments, usually within easy walking distance of a beach, park or both!
Whitford Beach is one of the closest to town, with walking and cycling tracks that wind along the foreshore. Mullaloo, the areaâs most popular beach, boasts white sand, safe swimming, and is patrolled by the local surf life saving club. A leafy reserve separates the waterfront from the street. There are spots for fishing, north of the main car park. This beach does get quite crowded in the summer.
For sweeping coastal panoramas, head to Hillarys Beach, which also offers public BBQ equipment and picnic areas close to the lookout. Hillarys Marina boasts a protected beach with designated swimming areas. To the south of Hillarys Marina, Boyinaboat Reef is a local destination for snorkellers. If youâre travelling with the family pet, you are in luck: some sections of Whitford and Hillarys Beaches are dog-friendly.
A dozen parks are open to the public in Kallaroo and the next suburbs over. Tom Simpson Park lines the foreshore, with a playground and plenty of BBQ equipment and picnic tables. A coastal garden showcases the regionâs native vegetation. If you donât have your own food, you can buy something to eat at the cafe.
A bit further from the waterfront, Bridgewater Park is a large green space where locals go to unwind and jog. Blackboy Park, meanwhile, is equipped with tennis courts, a playground area with a basketball hoop, and a childrenâs wading pool. The parkâs many trees provide ample shade.
Whitford City Shopping Center boasts over 250 shops and restaurants. Throughout the year, and particularly at holidays, the centre organises events for children of all ages, such as arts and craft sessions and treasure hunts. Every day, kids have access to Playworld, an indoor playground.
For a vintage style date night or family outing, head to Galaxy Drive-In, the only cinema of the sort in the Perth area. When you get hungry, there are quite a few restaurants to choose from in Kallaroo and the surrounding area. Most restaurants and cafes are clustered on Whitfords Avenue or border Bridgewater Park, with choices ranging from Italian to Nepalese cuisine.
One of Australia's biggest aquariums, AQWA, is under a 10-minute drive from Kallaroo. Adults and children can do some snorkelling and diving in an underwater tunnel and encounter marine life native to this part of Western Australia. There is a separate zone for visitors to view more dangerous creatures. In total, the aquarium is home to 400 species of marine species.
Hillarys Boat Harbour and Barrack Street Jetty act as departure points for Rottnest Island, which is an easy day trip from Kallaroo by ferry. Once on Rottnest Island, visitors will be able to explore untouched beaches and hike up to an iconic lighthouse. While on the island, try to spot some of the local quokka marsupials.
A suburb of Perth, Kallaroo is a 20-minute drive from the CBD and a 26 minute-drive from the international airport. To get to Kallaroo from the city centre by public transport, you will have to take a train and bus.
