Description

Paprika House is suitable for a couple, four or six people. It's an adults only retreat situated in pristine bushland, close enough to the beach to hear the surf at night.

Whether you want to walk the Cape to Cape trail nearby, or laze around reading or playing cards with friends, this house will provide you with a setting that is serene and secluded, and only 10 minutes drive from the town centre and close to wineries and beaches.

Designed by Fremantle architects EDHO for an artist and her husband, the contemporary structure consists of three rectangular forms angled one above another. The house perches above multi-headed grass trees, Snottygobbles, Peppermint and Marri trees, offering spectacular views westward down the valley towards the Margaret River.

The house is intimate and warm inside while connected to the natural world on the outside. Upstairs on the open terrace the sunsets are spectacular, and later as it gets dark the night sky will absorb you in its deep stars. A perfect place to have dinner on a clear night, by candlelight and the immense night sky.

Also on this floor are two bedrooms, both charming and cosy. In one, the windows are angled upward so that at night you can watch the stars slide slowly across the sky. Queen sized beds are perfect in their comfort with luxurious sheets, pillows and soft doonas. Books line the shelves: perhaps many you've always wanted to read but never got around to.

The bathroom on this floor serves both bedrooms with bath, shower and loo. Draw a bath and lie stretched out in its ample size and gaze out onto the tree tops. Equipped with a rain-head, the spacious shower has its own picture window. The rain water that comes from our tank leaves skin and hair feeling good. It's worth mentioning that the water is very good to drink too. Fluffy coloured towels are supplied.

On the ground floor is the living area with generous open fireplace warming the whole house in winter. A large flat screen TV with satellite dish, Sony sound system, and a selection of classical and popular music CDs and DVDs, are available. Shelves are heavy with books and there's a day bed to settle down on to read or a place just to soak up the sun. Or sit in a Danish rosewood Vodder chair with a glass of red and contemplate the artwork.

The kitchen is stocked with quality equipment for cooking needs. There's a Smeg electric oven and gas top and a silent friend in the dishwasher. Tasteful crockery and cutlery are plentiful; there's an espresso coffee machine, or a percolator if you prefer. And while you're doing the cooking, you can look out onto the beautiful grass trees.

Vegetable gardens downstairs offer some seasonal vegetables and herbs such as chives, mint, thyme, rosemary and oregano.

And when the food's prepared, serve it on the dining table, or under the umbrella on the outdoor concrete setting.

Adjacent to the kitchen is a laundry with washing machine and dryer and a separate toilet.

Downstairs is the studio: spacious and light filled. It is beautifully appointed with stylish furniture and Persian floor rugs to maintain warmth on the concrete floor. And a comfy Queen bed with luxurious linen. In warmer weather open the huge sliding door to look out onto the vegetable garden and bush beyond. It's a great way to take in the morning with a cup of tea in bed. A kitchenette is equipped with kettle, bar fridge, microwave, limited crockery, and a jar of biscuits. A walk in space allows you to unpack and hang your clothes. The studio has its own bathroom with shower and toilet.

And for the romantic there's an outdoor shower and claw enamel bath which has hot and cold water piper to it. After a swim at the beach rinse off under the outdoor shower, or draw a hot bath under the peppermint trees. Champagne seems to suit the occasion.

Each season has something distinctive, apart from the many surprises and pleasures that the Margaret River Region has to offer. In spring, the wildflowers are a delight. Both on the property and walking further afield, many species can be discovered and enjoyed. In summer, the warmth and spectacular beaches beckon. Or visit a cave, or go fishing on one of the local beaches. In winter time snuggle in front of the fire, tucked up on the day bed with a book.

Walking to the beach takes approximately half an hour, or a quick dash by 4 WD, and ten minutes by car to the town centre. There are also many beaches to explore in this region; some of the best known are Prevelly, Redgate and Contos beaches.

Drive south or north along Caves Road and you will find wineries to suit all tastes. A stone's throw south from the property is McHenry Hohnen who have good wines at affordable prices; Vasse Felix is a fifteen minute drive north; adjacent is Cullen Wine who offer quality and ethical produce with their biodynamically certified vineyards. Drive south to Leeuwin for wine tasting and lunch on their sprawling estate.

Detour from Caves Road to Metricup Road to indulge in chocolate at the Margaret River Chocolate Company, or visit Vase Virgin for olive oil products, or Providore with their delicious specialities.

A delight is the Saturday morning markets in town where you can buy all things local: raspberry vinegar, special smoked meat from the Farm Shop, nougat that's addictive, Jersey milk and organic eggs, fruit and veg grown in the South West.

One of our favourite places for breakfast or lunch is Café Boranup, right next door to Boranup gallery which displays fine woodwork made by local crafts people. Continuing south, a swim at Hamelin Bay is essential.

And after any exploration come back to the gentle peace of Paprika House.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful home a real treat to stay at Paprika! I booked Paprika house for my friend Tamsin and I as she was visiting form Sydney and wanted to explore the Margaret River area. Paprika house is simple stunning! Set in a beautiful location good for exploring both Dunsborough/Yallingup and Margaret River. The house is furnished and decorated with style, it's unique and really beautiful. The art work and books give it a homely feel yet it's one of the most modern houses I've stayed in! The open fire was so lovely on a wet and windy evening. Great communication with the owner Michele and would definitely go back for another stay!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Property & Location This property is tucked away in a very secluded spot overlooking the valley. A very comfortable house for us to base ourselves at for the Cape to Cape Mountain Bike event over the past 4 days. Outside shower & bath, inside bathrooms, huge fireplace, comfy beds were all fantastic.... and the fruit platter on arrival was greatly appreciated. This place is a 10 out of 10 for sure and comes highly recommended from me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Disconnect and enjoy the peace & serenity Paprika House is well positioned on the side of a valley, which is secluded by myriads of trees. The house has a Scandinavian feel and appeal, whilst being surrounded by endless views of treetops. Only high quality appliances and fittings have been used in this house, which adds to the opulence. The rooftop balcony allows you to sit above the canopy and take in the sea breeze, sunshine and enjoy a few glasses/bottles of wine. The balcony, which the kitchen overlooks, is perfect for drinking your morning coffee with friends. While the balcony, located on the opposite side of the house, is perfect for peace and quiet, looking endlessly into the bush land, of course, with you morning coffee! The herb and vegetable garden is well-appointed, which I helped myself to. There's something about consuming fresh produce from the garden, incomparable to the usual shop bought perishables. The location is perfect, in terms of distance from town, the local cellar doors and serenity. If you plan on dining out the entire time your in the region, then it's perfect. If you plan on preparing your own meals, the well appointed kitchen, again with quality kitchenware, caters for everyone. You've got everything! Not only do you have a magnificent kitchen, in which to operate, the windows surrounding the kitchen provide amazing views. Preparing coffee, each morning, in this kitchen felt like a privilege, as did preparing meals. If you want a proper get away, where there's no one else around, you want to escape the suburbs and get some fresh air, then this is the place you want. You'll recharge and be disheartened when it's time to go.
