Rated 3 out of 5 by from Hummingbird House This was my family's 3rd time over several years staying at Hummingbird House. It's a great location, beautiful outlook of the valley and comes with the all important fire for a cold night. We have always taken our dog and children with it and it's hard to say who likes the visiting birds and Kangaroos more. The property has become run down over the years but this may change as the For Sale sign (there was one there several years ago also) has an Under Contract sticker plastered across it. Still a comfortable base with all we needed.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Needs Updating First: Did we have a good time? Yes. So bear that in mind when you read the below: We stayed three nights. Great location and property has massive potential. We noticed on arrival that it had been on the market and has been sold. Hopefully the new owners recognize that potential and make a better effort. There is a lack of attention to detail, and upkeep is lacking. Some examples: There are 3 leaks in the roof. Yes, really. One in the kitchen. Two in the living area. Granted the rain was biblical when we were there, but still. The woodburner needs maintenance - broken handles, broken hearth. Chock full of ashes from burning paper or something. I emptied it, cleaned it, spent an hour or more chopping wood into sizes that would actually burn, including kindling. Firewood is left outside, in the rain. Just as well I did that on the first day..... Clearly, the owners don't REALLY want you to use the woodburner - too much hassle for them. Kitchen utensils are pretty basic, and cheap. Pots are black from use. Crockery mismatched and tired. Some needed washing before we could use it. Lounge furniture is old, saggy, stained and worn out. Nonetheless we kept our dog off, or on his own (clean) rug. Although property is passively heated, it gets seriously cold. Thankfully there are two small radiators (and the woodburner if you make the effort). The upstairs bedroom (which we didn't use) is spartan and accessed by a precipitously steep staircase, so be warned. Our dog could get up but stubbornly refused to climb down again ! I carried him, all 31kg of the poor wee soul. At least he was embarrassed ! Upsides - main bed is very comfortable. View are great. 'Roos in abundance (dog was non-plussed !). Property "vibe" is good - morning sunshine (through the rain). Birdsong and numerous 'roos. Neighbour's dogs coming to visit ours (manic fun). This is a LOVELY cabin - I wanted to visit it just because of its rammed earth construction and the location is great (but will likely be sub-divided by the new owners). The problem is that the existing owners did not make enough effort to warrant the price being paid, and I think that is a lack of investment into the property over a number or years. Disappointing - especially since keeping it fresh is a tax deductible is it not ? I hope the new owners take this on board. I would LOVE to be the new owner and I would make that effort if I was.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect winter getaway - close to town We visited during a recent weekend (20-22 May 2016) during a storm. This place is great during such weather and felt nice and cosy during our entire stay! The wood fire and electric oil heaters got plenty of use. Plenty of comfort whilst also appealing to those who like a bit of a cabin / farmhouse style in their accommodation. The local Kangaroos population is always present, chilling in the grass, also plenty of friendly birdlife (28's, Wrens, Kookaburras, Magpies, Honeyeaters). Quiet and peaceful - shame we didn't stay another night! Couple of things to note: 1. If you're planning to cook meals, bring your own pantry items (sauces, spices, sugar, tissues, paper towel, etc). Or duck in to town 5 minutes down the road. There is a massive pantry. 2. Bring milk, juice, water (although the rain tank water is fine IMO.) etc. 3. Spiders are nothing to be concerned about - few daddy long legs and I think one black house spider (well high in the ceiling). Consider them natural insect control. 4. Photos on this page are outdated - there is a large flat screen HDTV on the wall, and not the little TV as per the images.
