York is one of Western Australia's most historic towns. It was WA's first inland town having been established in 1831 and played a significant role in WA's economic fortunes after the discovery of gold in the 1890s. York is proud of this heritage and the foresight and determination of the local York resident's during the 1980s saw York become the first West Australian town to be subject to heritage protection. As a consequence, visitors can now explore WA's convict and colonial history by visiting the Residency Museum and Tipperary School next to the Sandalwood Yards, exploring the beautiful York Town Hall, visiting the precinct of Blandstown or some of the buildings designed by colonial architect George Temple-Poole, including the Post Office, Courthouse and Police Station, the old York hospital and York School.

The more adventurous visitors can enjoy hot air ballooning, skydiving, gliding and paragliding or stay in York during the annual Avon Descent which starts in nearby Northam.
