About Fleurieu Peninsula

The Fleurieu Peninsula: Waves, Wildlife and Wine

The Fleurieu Peninsula is affectionately considered Adelaide’s playground. Only a short drive from the city, travellers can spend their days swimming and surfing along the coast or hiking through lush inland reserves.

Fine wine and gourmet dining are also on the menu - the Peninsula arguably boasts the state’s best restaurants and is home to 4 different wine regions. If you’re bringing the kids, you will have numerous activities at your disposal, including a series of wildlife encounters, both on and off shore.

Holiday homes on the Fleurieu Peninsula are as diverse as travellers to the region. Opt for chic condos, stately villas or modern beach houses.

Along The Coast

The Fleurieu Peninsula boasts 250 km of coastline, with endless opportunities to partake in water sports or simply unwind on the sand. Some beaches along the Fleurieu Peninsula are quite deserted, whereas others are bustling with activity.

Surfers tend to prefer the Mid South Coast and Far South Coast (the southern end of the peninsula). Horseshoe Bay is a popular option for families who seek out calm, protected waters for safe swimming.

Meanwhile, Normanville’s endless stretch of sand are ideal for long, romantic strolls by the ocean. Off the coast, popular water sports include sea kayaking, snorkelling, diving and fishing.

Inland Activities

Beyond the coast, the Fleurieu Peninsula features many options for travellers wishing to immerse themselves in nature. For trails leading through pine forests and waterfalls, head to the Mount Lofty Ranges. Some paths lead to lookout points affording views all the way to the ocean and Kangaroo Island.

Deep Creek Conservation Park also offers quite a few trails. This is the largest remaining wildlife habitat on the peninsula, so keep your eyes open and your camera ready: you might see echidnas and kangaroos. Birdwatchers, bring your binoculars to observe the hundred or so species which call the park home.

If you’d just like to sit back and relax, bring a hamper to Ingalla Waterfall, a 250 metre high cascade. Locals often come here for picnics overlooking the falls. There are tables on site.

Food and Wine on the Fleurieu Peninsula

The Fleurieu Peninsula encompasses 4 wine regions, including McLaren Vale for, known for its shiraz, and Langhorne Creek, which produces white wine, notably chardonnay and sauvignon blanc. Indeed, 75 of the Peninsula’s wineries are listed in the Australian Good Food & Wine Guide.

Travellers seeking gourmet dining experiences can sample everything from fresh seafood in the coastal towns to locally produced olive oil in the hinterland. The Fleurieu Peninsula is considered to have the best restaurants in South Australia. While here, discover local delicacies along the Food and Wine Trail, as part of a tour group or on a self-guided adventure.

Throughout the year, festivals showcase the best of the Peninsula’s wining and dining. Your holiday might coincide with the McLaren Vale Sea and Vines Festival, Langhorne Creek Cellar Treasures Weekend or Beachside Food and Wine Festival.

Fleurieu for Families

Families visiting the Fleurieu Peninsula have no shortage of activities to keep the little ones entertained. Start off by riding camels on the beach in Victor Harbor, or hop aboard a whale watching cruise. These cruises run from May to October and many depart from Victor Harbor. To learn more about these marine mammals, head to the SA Whale Centre, which runs a school holidays program.

Step back in time with the horse drawn tram, whisking visitors from Victor Harbor to Granite Island. Once on Granite Island, you can participate in a penguin tour to get to know the little blue penguins who live there. Looking for free entertainment? Almost each town on the Peninsula has a playground or skatepark.

Getting to the Fleurieu Peninsula

The Fleurieu Peninsula begins just 45 minutes south of Adelaide. Depending on the town of your holiday rental, the most straightforward way to get there is to drive from South Australia’s capital city. Otherwise, you can take a public bus or book a charter.
