Destination guide

Trust us, you won't be feeling bluey on Ko Samui

Ko Samui's got a reputation as 1 of Thailand's more upmarket islands, but the truth is that Ko Samui vacation rentals have something to suit all budgets and tastes. If you're in the market for high-end dining and luxury spas then you're onto a winner, but equally if you're more about beers on the beach and hiking trips into the interior jungle then Ko Samui's got that covered, too. The island does a great line in temples, the diving possibilities are fantastic, and it's got the kind of nightlife scene that's made Thailand a top travel destination for decades.

Things to do

Wat's that you say? A mummified monk?

Even the most dedicated beachgoer can only lounge on the sands for so long, and when you're finished, an excursion to 1 of the island's temples (or 'wats') is a Ko Samui classic. Among the most popular are Wat Phra Yai – with its 15-metre Buddha – and Wat Khunaram, which is famous for displaying a mummified monk. If you're looking for a hiking destination, then the waterfalls at Na Mueang are something a bit special, while selfies in front of the anatomically shaped Grandmother and Grandfather rocks on Lamai Beach are a regular fixture on social media.

Looking for a peach of a beach? Look no further.

Ask any returning traveller about Ko Samui vacation rentals, and chances are their eyes will light up with visions of the island's famous palm-fringed beaches. During the day, it's all about sunning yourself and cooling off in the water, and by night, many of them light up with beach bars. If you like it lively, head for Chaweng, but if you want to dial the volume right down, try the more tranquil spots of Mae Nam or the south coast. Luxury-seekers can book into 1 of the island's upscale spas, while intrepid types will be drawn to diving trips and jungle treks.

Like it says on the T-shirts, 'same same, but different'

Ko Samui's got a tropical climate, but it's less tropical than most of the rest of Thailand. As you'd expect, it's hot year round, but it tends to be drier than elsewhere in the country, especially during the monsoon season (April to September), when the obligatory rain storms come in shorter bursts. The flipside comes towards the end of the year, when the rain picks up for Ko Samui vacation rentals and eases off elsewhere in Thailand. If you're not a great fan of the wet stuff then you'll want to book for February, which is usually the driest month.

Natural highlights

Second largest, but certainly not second best

Ko Samui might be Thailand's second-largest island (after Phuket), but there's nothing second-rate about this place. Though most famous for its sandy beaches, epic sunrises and coconut palms, it's also got a gorgeous forested interior, with highlights including the Na Mueang waterfalls. And that's before you venture into the ocean. With its coral reefs, the area round Ko Samui is home to a staggering range of marine life, including sharks, rays, turtles and barracuda. One of the best dive spots is the Ang Thong National Marine Park, though if you're just looking for a bit of snorkelling, head to Ko Tan.
