Mount Baw Baw Walking, Running and Hiking

Mount Baw Baw is set within a national park of the same name. Endless bushwalking opportunities await, with many trails starting close to the alpine village. Discover the surrounds at a leisurely pace along the La Trobe or Beech Trails, the latter leading to a spacious picnic area.

More advanced hikers can take on the Summit Trail. For full-day expeditions, opt for the track to the Mushroom Rocks, giant granite formations shaped like mushrooms. As you hike, stay on the lookout for wallabies and many native bird species.

Mt Baw Baw also has trails suitable to alpine runners, with events and competitions throughout the summer. The Baw Baw Trail Run Festival occurs each year in March.

Cycling and Mountain Biking

Mount Baw Baw has become a hub for mountain bikers around Australia. Advanced riders can undertake the challenging ride up to the village. This is one of the toughest tracks in the country, steeper even than many Tour de France climbs!

When it comes to downhill mountain biking, cyclist have access to a designated track on the western side of Mount Baw Baw. As of this season, there are shuttles which bring riders back up to the summit.

While in the area, visitors can sign up for mountain biking lessons, with classes for beginners, intermediate and experienced riders.

Mount Baw Baw for Families

There are plenty of activities for families in Mount Baw Baw, winter or summer. In the colder months, kids can choose from three snow play areas, with hills for tobogganing and sledding. If the little ones want to learn to ski or snowboard, they can sign up for lessons catering especially to them.

Husky sled tours provide entertainment for the whole family. Discover the village and snowy surrounds as you are ferried away in a husky-drawn sleigh. In the summer, families can enjoy some of the easier walking trails, or play a game of disk golf amidst mountain scenery.

Getting to Mount Baw Baw

If you’re arriving from Melbourne, you can drive to Mount Baw Baw in 2.5 hours. Once in the village, you won’t need a car to access the slopes or some of the closer walks.
