Named after the fields it overlooks, Orlege End is located on a livestock farm in West Lothian, Scotland. This contemporary conversion is at the far end of the striking, traditional eighteenth century Crosswoodhill farmhouse and has transformed the open-plan space into accommodation. It’s now a real home away from home for a romantic escape, work colleagues, or a family getaway. The owner lives at the far end of the large Crosswoodhill farmhouse and hundreds of excellent Trip Advisor reviews testify to her passion in achieving memorable experiences for her guests.
The two floors have an unusual layout and preserve some of the features of the building’s original role, rolling oats for feeding to livestock. A gallery overlooks the open-plan living space which is flooded with light thanks to roof-lights.
This self-catering property with underfloor heating downstairs was designed with flexibility in mind and the luxurious bedroom upstairs sleeps up to three and can be configured in various ways, depending on your needs. The room can be made up with three single beds, or two of these can form a sumptuous superking bed. Use it as a double, a family room or as three singles. This bedroom also has a delightful ensuite bathroom. The rest of the upstairs is a cosy gallery area which looks out over the surrounding countryside and down onto the living area below. The sofa bed there, though affording little privacy, can prove useful as an extra bed.
Head down the beautiful ash staircase and you’ll find a double bed cleverly concealed during the day. This pull-down bed is disguised as an elegant solid oak cupboard when not in use and has a fully sprung mattress for comfort. When it’s bedtime, pull the bed down and with the double-sided curtain sweeping across the room a cosy sleeping area is created, sectioned off from the living area. Please note that this unusual bedroom arrangement, though excluding light and with its own window and ensuite bathroom with a shower and a bath, does not exclude sound, So perhaps not ideal for early bedder who might be disturbed by others still socialising in the living area !
The beautiful open-plan living space is light and airy, thanks to the double-height ceiling and the natural light flooding through the original windows in the end gable and the glass doors that open out onto the courtyard. On warm summer days, throw the doors open and invite the fresh air in. On chillier evenings, light the stove and relax on one of the large leather sofas. The large kitchen is fully equipped with granite worktops, underfloor heating beneath limestone flags and beautiful oak units.
Orlege End is a fantastic base for exploring central and southern Scotland. In 30 minutes, you can be in the heart of historic Edinburgh, or in Glasgow in just an hour. Or 15 minutes to Livingston. West Lothian offers varied and attractive scenery, with plenty of hills to climb, country parks, exciting and unique attractions and cultural opportunities to explore. The farm itself has 2000 acres to explore and much of this has been declared an ‘area of great landscape value’, so make sure to pack your wellies. Excellent restaurants close by, but the kitchen facilities in the property are amazing.
Child, disability and pet friendly, there is an extra charge of £20 per pet per stay paid direct to the owner. Fuel and electricity are not included in the price per night displayed. Instead electricity meter readings and oil tank readings are taken at the start and end of a stay and the guest pays at cost as per usage at the end of the stay. This encourages guests to be green.
