A little further afield is the coastal town of Silloth, once a popular Victorian seaside resort, with a beach, large village green and handful of shops. Stroll along the promenade and take in the views over the Solway Firth to Dumfries and Galloway in south west Scotland. About an hour away is Kielder Water and Forest, also worth a visit. Shops, pub and restaurants 2 miles.
