About this property

Traditional Village House with a private pool in Villanueva de San Juan

Nestled in a traditional hillside village, this house will provide everything you need to recharge and revive from the hustle and bustle of life. This house was the old bakery for the village. Long since disused, it has been upgraded as a comfortable village house with all modern conveniences. Olive wood beams span nearly all of the rooms in this house and there are many ‘quirks’ - as you would expect!
Although none of the walls are straight, it has a comfortable and charming rustic feel that you will love.

This small village of just over 1400 people is incredibly welcoming and delighted to see visitors. It's location, at the centre of a square between Málaga, Cádiz, Grenada and Sevilla makes it an ideal base for day trips and exploring Andalucía.

When you arrive, a country oasis waits for you behind the double front doors.

You will find a large hallway with a quiet and cool ‘reading room’ to the right. (This room also has a sofa which can be used as an extra bed if needed)
Through more traditional double doors into the lounge area with a corner sofa, chairs, TV and the main focal point of this room - the large log burning stove if you visit in winter.

Two steps down into the kitchen/dining area, with an extensive array of cooking utensils, pots and pans. The kitchen is fully resourced, with a DeLonghi bean-to-cup coffee machine, Bosch oven, gas hob and microwave.
A table with 6 dining chairs sits in the middle with doors leading outside to the lower terrace with dining area and parasol. You will find a charcoal BBQ and preparation table.

Down then to the summer garden and pool. Please note that the pool is a small pool (4.2m x 2.2m) for dipping into and cooling down. The pool is very private, not overlooked and all yours to enjoy.

You will also find the outdoor shower and late afternoon sun trap by the poolside.

Stairs lead you up to the upper terrace with relaxing table and chairs and a window/door (mind your head!) onto the first floor of the house.

Off the Kitchen/Dining area is the Utility which has a washing machine, tumble dryer, vanity unit, mirror, WC and a full bath with overhead shower.

Upstairs, all bedrooms have air conditioning. The 'grey room' is the first bedroom you meet - a double room, looking over the garden, with a toilet and sink; up 3 steps to the 'green room' with windows overlooking the 1st landing. This bedroom is fully en-suite including shower with a king size bed.
Next door is the 'orange room' - the largest at the front of the house, also fully en-suite with a super king bed.

Near the house you will find walking trails, cycling, birds of prey, a flamboyance of flamingos often flying above, and amazing views across the hillsides.

The village boasts general shops, a butcher, grocer, local bars serving tapas, lunch & dinner, village plaza, church, baker, pizza shop, pharmacy, bank, electrical store, hardware store - and the Co-Operative on the fringe of the village for all things olive oil and more.

The village also offers a large, community swimming pool (open June to September). You will find most of the local families spending afternoons here when it’s hot!

We have recently visited the house and village. Although Covid-19 hasbeen a difficult time for everyone, there are signs of recovery now. We have taken the time to make sure that the house is Covid-19 safe and can be cleaned and sanitised appropriately.

Perfect Andalusian stay.
We stayed for 9 nights in this lovely house in the friendly village of Villanueva de San Juan. The house had been thoughtfully furnished making it a very comfortable and relaxed visit. The kitchen was very well equipped, the beds extremely comfortable and there was plenty of room. The two terraces were great for reading/ eating and the plunge pool was fantastic for cooling down on those hot Andalusian days! Communication with the the hosts was immediate and friendly. The location is good for both local and further away trips. There is a train from Osuna to Seville with Jerez and Cadiz about two hours away by car. We would have no hesitation in recommending it to others and indeed coming back ourselves. Trish and Tim - May 2022

Andalusia heaven
This is the second time we have stayed in this property which must tell you that we like it. The house is in a gorgeous little hilltop village in between Malaga and Seville . It has 3 good size bedrooms, amazing facilities (especially if you like to cook and bbq) and a very handy little pool because it does get hot in Andalucía even in April. The first time we stayed was for the Seville marathon in 2020 so we didn’t travel much to save our legs. The second time we went full on tourist and went back to Seville to Granada and to Ronda. All of them are within a very reasonable drive of the property. Granada was the furthest away and it was less than 2 hours and a very easy and pretty drive. The village itself is small and perfectly formed – supermarkets, butchers, cafes and restaurants with very friendly people who all say hello every time you see them. The most amazing thing for me though is the views from the village – there is a lot of amazing walking just outside the door. We were there in Spring and it was just beautiful. You do need a car - oh and the beds were so comfortable that were have bought one for home…

About the host

Hosted by Diana Smith

The house is owned by Mary & Diana. Based in the UK for 20 years, Mary is Irish while Diana is from the Midlands. We work in the UK and bought the house initially for our family and us to enjoy. However, we now know how special is and would love to share it with more people.

Why they chose this property

We discovered this house by chance while on holiday in Spain. We decided to buy the property as our bolt hole for friends and family. On our first night out in the village at midnight (after finishing painting!), we strolled up to the plaza hearing a buzz and turned the corner to find most of the village playing bingo and laughing, children playing and bars serving into the small hours. We knew we had made the right choice. In 2019 we upgraded the small pool, had some lighting put in the garden, repaired the roof, changed all the showers, installed a better water heating system and made sure the house was up to the standard we would expect of a holiday rental.

What makes this property unique

A fully upgraded traditional home with high quality facilities, in the middle of a quiet Spanish rural village, this property offers a truly relaxing and restoring experience.
