About this property

Shangri La is a stately single storey holiday villa in Barbados that sleeps up to eight guests

Shangri La is a stately single storey holiday villa in Barbados that sleeps up to eight guests. With gorgeous views from the Courtyard garden, you and your guests are guaranteed a phenomenal experience.

Entering the villa, you will first be greeted by the Great Room. This is perhaps the most opulent living space in Shangri La. The room is brightened by the Crystal Versailles Chandeliers that showcase the lounge area at one end and the dining space at the other. Open the French doors to allow the sea’s breeze to gently role into this classically styled room. The Media Room has the most relaxed atmosphere in the villa. Not only are guests welcome to use the modern media set-up, but there is also a bar, where guests are encouraged to whip up a cocktail or two whilst trying their hand at a game of cards. If there are any keen cooks amongst the party, they will love the fully equipped kitchen that runs alongside the villa. With large prepping counters and a granite-topped island, some serious meals can be conceived in this very space.

All the bedrooms in Shangri La have been designed with the upmost comfort in mind. Firstly, the White Room can be found next to the Media Room and has a queen-sized bed and its furnishings are in keeping with the Colonial theme that runs throughout the Courtyard. The Polo Room is home to two double bedrooms, that are found in the South Wing of the villa. With a Mahogany Armoire and Bureau, these bedrooms are really well suited to lovers of traditional themes that have continued to embrace a Spanish influence present in other parts of Shangri La. The North Wing is home to The Princess Margaret Room. This bedroom has an en-suite bathroom and skylights, that allow guests to star gaze at night and enjoy the warmth of the breaming down on their faces in the morning.

The Courtyard has perhaps the most striking setting throughout Shangri La, allowing guests to make use of the game table or simply frolic amongst the snug furnishings that are scattered around the private swimming pool. A Colonial period theme runs all over this space the central piece being a three-tiered coral stone fountain, with carved dolphins.

The villa has a selection of exceptional staff to help you and your guests enjoy your stay even more, including – a Housekeep, Laundress and Cook.

What you should know

Location

Barbados is a truly phenomenal holiday destination, and geologically unique; a coral island, initially pushed from the sea as two separate land masses by volcanic activity many years ago. Over time these two land masses merged together creating the isle we now know as Barbados. Barbados lies on the boundary of the Caribbean and South American continental plates making it unlike any other Caribbean Island. Within the core of the island, made up mainly of coral sediment, numerous caves and underground lakes can be found. Arguably the most famous of these is Harrison’s Cave; a network of caves, waterfalls, pools and fantastic stalagmites and stalactites.

Descendants of the indigenous Arawakan-speaking tribes tell that the original name for Barbados was ‘Ichirouganaim’ meaning ‘red land with white teeth.’ The reason for the later name Barbados is controversial; some believe that the Portuguese, en route to Brazil, were the first Europeans to come to the island. Others say that it was this Spanish which gave it the Spanish name ‘Los Barbudos’.  The word Barbados means ‘bearded ones’ but it is really personal preference as to whether ‘bearded’ refers to the long, hanging routes of the bearded fig-tree (Ficus citrifolia) indigenous to the island; to the allegedly bearded ‘Caribs’ who once inhabited the island; or, more romantically, to the foam spraying over the outlying reefs, giving the impression of a beard.

When visiting Barbados, the first thing you are sure to notice are the gorgeous and renowned flat white sand beaches. On the west coast of Barbados, miles of coral shore beaches and fine white sands stretch along a hypnotising turquoise sea. The West Coast of Barbados is also fringed with countless breath-taking Coral Reefs to provide excellent snorkelling and scuba diving opportunities. The South Coast also offers something for everyone, and is a curious mixture of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Here you can swim in calm waters, snorkel over the inshore reefs and tidal pools, and at the southernmost tip of the island, you can windsurf.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages

Shangri La is a great place to bring the family, especially the kids. Barbados has everything you could expect from a top holiday destination – sun, food and epic culture.

As it’s important to keep the little ones entertained, perhaps take a day trip to Harrison’s Cave. Kids can witness all kinds of rock formations and delve deep into the spooky depths of this cave system. After your morning excitement, the next stop should be Welchman Hall Gully…this one’s not underground! With pretty little waterfalls trickling down mountains and busy birds diving in and out of trees, your children will be in awe of not only the wildlife but also the natural scenery.

There’s many schools and businesses that specialise in water sports in Barbados, so try your hand at surfing or paddle boarding for instance. Not only is it a great form of exercise for children – Mum & Dad can watch on from the beach with a rum cocktail as the kids splash around in the water.
