The municipality of Hermandad de Campoo de Suso is located in the highest area of the Campoo region with peaks that exceed 2000 meters of altitude, surrounded by mountains, forests and landscapes of great wealth. It has an extension of 225 km2 and 25 population centers (“pueblucos”), which have managed to maintain their essence: Abiada, Argüeso, Barrio, Brañavieja, Camino, Celada de los Calderones, Entrambasaguas, Espinilla, Fontibre, Hoz de Abiada, Izara, La Lomba, Mazandrero, La Miña, Naveda, Ormas, Paracuelles, Population of Suso, Proaño, Salces, La Serna, Soto, Suano, Villacantid and Villar.
In Fontibre we can visit the source of the Ebro River, in a beautiful park and take a route through the nearby Guariza forest. The Roman chroniclers already located the sources of the Ebro (Fontes Hiberis) or sources of the Ebro in the land of the Cantabrians, near the city of Julióbriga. Its name derives from the ancient toponym Hiber (Hiberus flumen), which also gives its name to the Iberian Peninsula. After traveling less than 10 km and crossing Reinosa, it is bagged in the reservoir of the same name in a 6,250ha sheet of water. We find river beaches, great examples of birdlife in this great wetland and the possibility of water sports such as windsurfing, kayaking or rafting after its dam.
The ski resort of Alto Campoo or Brañavieja is located in the same municipality (Brotherhood of Campoo de Suso), and with routes such as Pico Tres Mares, it is considered one of the best in the Cantabrian. It has 30 km of skiing that includes: 23 slopes (4 green, 10 blue and 9 red, cross-country circuit and snow park and snow cannons.
From its peaks you can see the Cantabrian Sea to the North, the nearby Picos de Europa to the northwest, the Cantabrian Mountains and the Palencia Mountain to the southwest, and how the glacial valley of Campoo opens up. On the northern slope are the beech and oak groves of the Saja-Besaya Natural Park, a nature reserve where deer, roe deer and golden eagles abound. On the southern slope, the presence of the Iberian wolf is frequent, and the brown bear, which has returned to its origins, as in Braños was the first municipality in the Palencia mountain.
Enjoy the nature of the Campoo Valley with family or friends.
