About this property

The Lincoln House, Be Comfortable at Home in Ortonville

The Lincoln House was built in 1895, and was "A Grand Home" when it was first built. Over the years different owners changed things, and of late it has been our labor of love to restore and renovate. Set on two city lots, the yard is large bordered on the west side by lilac bushes and overlooking the foot of Big Stone Lake. Located a block and a half up from the Big Stone County Courthouse, it provides easy access to Ortonville's main business street (2nd St.), and is within walking distance of a few stores, churches, bars/restaurants, grocery store, convenience store, banks and post office. The Ortonville Hospital and Golf Course are minutes away by car. There is a small playground with swings and a slide a two blocks away.

As you enter the property you will be in a enclosed porch that spans the entire width of the house, and offers a casual bright social area with views of the foot of Big Stone Lake. Inside is a large living space, also the full width of the house, with a 3/4 bath (including an awesome rain shower) tucked under the stair case. The back of the house offers a large kitchen (fully stocked for preparing and serving meals (you just bring the food), and a dining room that can easily accommodate 8 or more. Upstairs off a bright open hallway are three large bedrooms and a full bath (soon with laundry). One bedroom is set up with two twin beds, and can easily accommodate a pack-n-play (3 are available at the property), Two bedrooms are setup with king size beds, but can easily be split into two XL twin beds if needed. One of these king bedrooms can also easily accommodate a pack-n-play.

All the floors in the property have been redone, along with fresh paint, and fixtures through out the house. Seating in the living spaces is plentiful and comfortable. This property is designed and furnished as a place for families to gather and enjoy each other's company. It is also a great house for fishermen, hunters or a gal's getaway weekend.

We live very close, so we can be available if/when needed, but leave our guests to enjoy the property in private.

Special events (bridal or baby showers for example) will be considered on a case by case basis.

Well behaved dogs are welcome (there is a pet fee). We are dog lovers, and we know that even the best dogs can mis-behave when in new circumstances, but that owners love to have their dogs with them when they travel. In order to keep our pet friendly policy in place, we ask owners to please clean up after their furry friends inside and out, respect the neighbors by keeping them on the property and barking to a minimum. We do request that all dogs be kenneled if left alone at the property, and we can provide a kennel if necessary.

Location is great. Walk to downtown. Snow situation made things a little difficult but cant blame owners on that. All in all satisfied.

About the host

Hosted by Sue Lockwood

Host profile image
We live in the country a few miles outside Ortonville city limits, some chickens and our two Goldendoodles Hammer and Sophie, and our cat TP. Greg's parents are from the area and he has been hunting and fishing in Big Stone County his entire life. Moving to the area and ultimately retiring here was a no brainer, and two of his brothers have followed suit. Sue works for a local granite quarry and loves the slower pace that the area offers. Renovation projects and hosting good times are what we enjoy most, so The Lincoln House has been a perfect combination of both. We also own and run Ortonville Mercantile & Gallery, a unique gift shop AND Ortonville Mystery Games, which is fun entertainment in the form of escape room games and mystery room games. Stop by 33 2nd street and give it a try when you are in town.

Why they chose this property

When we found this property, it had not been updated in many years. The bones were great and it just needed some love and attention. Located just up from Ortonville's main street it seemed like an ideal location for a VRBO property for people coming to the area for any number of reasons, and would allow them to have family and friends from the area in for lunch or dinner or just some catching up on the front porch.

What makes this property unique

The Lincoln House is centrally located for all that Big Stone County has to offer. It is also only 15 minutes away from Milbank, SD. For those used to driving city distances to get to anything, a 15 minute drive is nothing. Also, The Lincoln House offers comfortable sleeping accommodations for up to 8 adults without sleeping on top of each other. All the rooms are very spacious. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking meals and the dining room can accommodate 8-10 comfortably. As hosts, we are committed to making sure our guests have what they need, so they can enjoy their stay.
