About this property
Cosy Cottage in the Heart of Hadrian’s Wall Country
Guests can escape the hustle and bustle in this charming, fully furnished stone cottage. The Parlour has been lovingly renovated into a perfect place for relaxing after a day’s exploring of the local area.
The Parlour sits in the heart of village of Acomb, just outside the market town of Hexham. Acomb comes from the Anglo Saxon word ‘akum’ meaning ‘place of the oaks’. Acomb is the focal point for a number of beautiful walks and cycle routes. Popular walks include Acomb to Watersmeet, a designated site of special scientific interest for the flora and fauna, and Acomb to Heavenfield, the site of a historic battle as well as the beautiful St Oswald’s church. A Roman stone carving sits a stone’s throw from the Parlour and St John Lee Church is a 10 minute walk away along a tree lined bridleway. The village also has three pubs, all with beer gardens, a fish and chip shop and a convenience shop (inside the Queen’s Arms pub).
The Parlour offers all the modern conveniences like high speed Internet, Netflix, underfloor heating, Sage espresso machine and USB charging sockets in every room while also showcasing its history as a milking parlour, which saw cows entering through the front door to be milked until the 1980s.
The Parlour is ideal for a couple or small family. The principle bedroom has a king size bed and is located on the ground floor. On the mezzanine there are two low single beds under the eaves. The mezzanine overlooks the living and dining area and is accessible up a narrow staircase (not suitable for those with mobility issues or very young children).
Everything guests need to enjoy a perfect stay has been considered from access to a secure place to store bicycles to a dedicated laundry room both of which are located just behind the Parlour. The laundry room contains a washing machine, tumble dryer, clothes basket and laundry products. And for those needing to mix work with leisure, there are seat cushions to make sitting and working more comfortable, as well as spare USB cables, note pad, pens and plenty of coffee and tea!
Whether you want to settle down in front of the wood burning stove, plan your next day’s adventure with the framed OS map or sit on the patio, pour a drink, and watch the world go by, you’ll want to stay at the Parlour ‘til the cows come home’.

What makes this property unique
The best things about the Parlour is its history and my dad renovated it. The Parlour was a working milking Parlour until the 1980s. Guests can see a framed photo of the cows going through the front door to be milked. When you step outside, you’ll see a bench under the trees in front of the Parlour. There is a plaque dedicated to Artie Mews (brother to Lily Mews who was a tenant farmer in the White House) who sat on the bench and watched the cows come home every afternoon to be milked. If you chat to any locals, they’ll be sure to share a story or two about the Mews siblings.
