About this property
Calder Cottage - One Bedroom House, Sleeps 2
A tranquil base from which to explore the South Pennines, Bronte Country, and the Yorkshire Dales National Park, this charming terraced house is an ideal choice for a solo traveller, romantic retreat or family of three. It’s located between Halifax and Sowerby Bridge – filming locations for TV series Gentleman Jack, Last Tango in Halifax, and Happy Valley. Stroll around 350 metres, and on certain days you can climb the 369 steps to the viewing platform of Wainhouse Tower – the world’s tallest folly. Other walks from your door take you to the canals, Scarr Bottom Woods, Skircoat Moor, and even to Ripponden along a disused railway line. Quaint Haworth village, the home of the Bronte sisters, is 11.5 miles away, while the market town of Hebden Bridge is just 6.5 miles. If the bright lights of a big city call, Leeds is 16 miles and Manchester 30 miles. This quaint cottage is set within a row of five properties that once made up a 17th-century farmhouse, around which sheep would have grazed. With high ceilings and spacious rooms, the cottage is full of original features such as wooden beams, a stone inglenook fireplace, and an exposed stone wall with a mullioned window. Step straight into the lounge/diner, a light-filled room featuring a parquet floor and restored-pine doors, as well as a Yorkshire stone inglenook fireplace with a flame-effect gas fire, offering instant warmth after a day outdoors. After dining at the table overlooking the garden, you can relax on the comfortable sofa (which converts to sleep an extra guest) and switch on the Smart TV for some evening entertainment. From here, it’s through a small vestibule, up two steps and through a low door into the kitchen, where you can enjoy whipping up hearty Yorkshire breakfasts and delicious suppers. When you’re ready for bed, take the cottage-style stairs up to the first floor and find a landing with a desk and space for a travel cot. The super-king-size bedroom, which can be made up as a twin on request, is bright and spacious, with ample storage and an ornamental Victorian fireplace. Completing the interior is a well-appointed family bathroom with a rainfall shower over the bath and an illuminated mirror. Head out to the south-facing, enclosed front garden, which overlooks the Calder Valley and Wainhouse Tower. There are hedges on both sides for privacy, and the Yorkshire stone paving is complemented by pretty flower beds. There’s seating at both ends of the garden in which you can enjoy the sun. Parking is on-street and subject to availability.
