Alpine meadows and butterflies
We had a wonderful week enjoying hiking through alpine meadows full of wild flowers. The property was excellent, clean and comfortable with lots of hot water. The kitchen was well equipped, and when the kettle didn't work Sylvia replaced it quickly.
Our communication with Sylvia before we arrived was helpful and she even sent us the best train schedules from Zürich Airport. Christian met us at the train station and took us to a supermarket to buy some essentials before taking us up to the chalet. Good that we did buy some stuff as there was very little in the store cupboard and no welcome milk and bread. Christian did bring some of his wonderful cheese, but a welcome pack would have been a perfect addition to this place.
We decided to use public transport and it was a great decision. The rail network is amazing and super efficient and Grindlewald is serviced by a great bus service. There is a bus twice an hour up and down into Grindlewald, but it is actually only a 20 odd minute walk down to the town along paths and back roads. And of course with all the cable cars a massive range of varied walks are accessible.
This is a lovely chalet in a wonderful location and highly recommended. Hope to see a barbecue next time we come!
I would thoroughly recommend staying at this chalet if you would prefer to be away from the main town of Grindelwald. It is about 3km uphill from the centre of Grindelwald and is situated in the most beautiful valley surrounded by amazing scenery. To wake up every morning with views of the Eiger is just incredible. Any neighbours are quite a distance away and the whole area is very peaceful day and night, the only noise is from a nearby river. There are great walks/hikes right from the chalet and although we did hire a car we didn't use it every day. We walked several times to Grindelwald which is mostly downhill and caught the local bus back. Parking is quite difficult in the town and quite expensive if you do find a space. We used the car to travel to the beautiful alpine lake at Kandersteg and neighbouring valleys but we could have used the trains to do this. We drove from Zurich Airport in under 3 hours but again we could have taken the train. We met Silvia and Christian (the owner of the house) in town and followed them to the chalet which I think would have been quite difficult to find in the dark. They took the time to show us around the chalet and how everything worked. I would recommend going to a grocery shop before you arrive at the chalet for basic provisions such as bread and milk etc although the owners provided sufficient toilet roll, soap, dishwasher tablets etc. We thoroughly enjoyed our week in the area, helped by absolutely beautiful weather, and would thoroughly recommend this chalet to anyone visting the area.
Spoiled by customer service at other places I have stayed.
Upon arrival found the detached holiday space was not prepared for move in. The husband who was very nice but had trouble with English said they thought with 3 the two bedrooms in the house were enough. My idea was .to reside in that room and allow the 2 women the main house. My daughter and a married friend of hers were going to do hiking and I was planning on being a couch potato. So I slept downstairs and they were upstairs. The owner came and made the bed in the detached dwelling because I had a granddaughter coming for the second week. Every thing worked out fine but believe in getting what is advertised and there should be no assumptions made. The second item was in being shown around by the owner he came to the electric box and showed us I believe a fuse swith which he said be jiggled if you run out of hot water. When there are 6 people sometimes they run out of hot water. But because of our low number we should not have trouble. I am 83 and go on vacation to not solve problems but rather to enjoy myself. I would prefer to have their number and let be known any please call them. The place and the owners were very nice. I do not know if the sickness I have was coloring what I have just said I am customer trained having been in business. The views were great and for hikers it is a paradise. I believe you will be seeing 2 people again as the ladies were like mountain goats and were enjoying them selves to the utmost. Thank you for your service.

Chalet Bernet --An Authentic and Exceptional Swiss Experience
We have vacationed in Grindelwald for 45 years, and stayed in one hotel, 2 camping grounds, and 5 different chalets in our 30 or 40 visits.
Nothing we had seen or read about Chalet Bernet prepared us for its remarkable location--set on a mountainside with exceptional views all around of high mountains around Grindelwald, notably the Wetterhorn and the Eiger-- and the warmth and charm of the lovingly restored interior.
We felt right at home in this cosy chalet. Of our many visits to Grindelwald, this one made us feel "part of" and not like mere "visitors."
Chalet Bernet is a free standing chalet, not an apartment within a chalet.
There is a modern structure opposite the chalet which includes the separate single bedroom and bathroom(shower) which is included in this chalet's rental, and "garages" for the owner's farm equipment.
The chalet and this opposite structure are surrounded by alpine meadows. The owner has 5 or 6 cows--currently in the higher mountains above Grindelwald for the warm months, as is typical of all Grindelwald cows. He and a son were out working, cutting and bringing in the hay. They were unobtrusive.
The chalet has been in the owner's family for generations.
The owner's partner is a charmer, and speaks many languages. She manages a small, unique gift shop in town. They live near the center of town, but the thoughtful owner--again, he does not intrude-- is around on his property almost daily.
The main floor includes the typical, sheltered and windowed Swiss porch running the width of the house; a separate room for boots, coats; a well-equipped kitchen with corner table; a modern bathroom with heated floor and bathtub. The living room includes another, larger table, and 2 sofas. A large bedroom is just off the living room.
The beautiful tiled kitchen floor is heated and blue, like a water-color.
There are several charming wooden cupboards in the kitchen and living room.
The chalet has lovely, decorative, and some-uselful details, in cushions, carved cows, paintings, and hanging cards, old skis and poles, and a big, decorated cow bell. Very nice lighting fixtures.
Upstairs is a large bedroom with one double bed, one single, 3 very large closets.
There were window boxes full of geraniums on the main and upper floor and a garden down front, with flowers and vegetables.
A washer and dryer are on a lower (basement) level, entered from an exterior door.
We were comfortable here. Our vacation was wonderful.

This is a beautiful, free-standing chalet, lovingly redone and furnished. Amazing, caring attention to detail--in furnishings and in decoration. We were very comfortable, felt at home, and lacked nothing. I loved the very typical old side porch, running the length of the house, with a door on one end, and windows all along the side. What did surprise me is the astonishing location of this 400 year old chalet, in the owner's fields on a sloping mountainside with clear views of the Wetterhorn, Eiger, and surrounding mountains. There is a sense of spaciousness, as there are few structures immediately near this chalet, other than its own separate apartment, included in the rental, and modern garages for the owner's farm equipment. The large, beautiful master bedroom is right off the living room. The other large bedroom is upstairs--steep stairs--and has a double bed, and a single bed, and 3 large, ample closets. There are lovely Swiss cupboards in the living room and kitchen. There is a separate room for boots, jackets, etc., just off that old Swiss porch. The chalet has been in the owner's family for generations. His partner is delightful, and she speaks many languages. The owner actively farms with his son. They have 6 cows--highly valued in Grindelwald. His partner manages a small, beautiful gift shop in town. We have frequented Grindelwald for 45 years, visited 30-40 times. Through the years, we have camped in both campgrounds, stayed in an old hotel, and in 5 different chalets, or apartments in chalets. Chalet Bernet is my favorite. It is a charmer!
Wonderful stay !
Great location above the charming village of Grindelwald. About 30 minutes walk to village which we enjoyed as we set out on our adventure each day in the Bernese Oberland region. Accommodations were clean. Owner spoke little English but we found him friendly and a great host. First time in a chalet which the 6 of us found to be such a treat. Great hiking. This region of the country is just spectacular. Would definitely return.
