3 bedroom, 1 bath 1910 preserved Craftsman with lake views
About Kate Evans
We are from Philadelphia, lived there our entire lives and still do. While we love the city, we yearned for an escape that was even more refreshing, natural, breathtaking, and welcoming than the typical Jersey Shore experience. We still love the beach, and always will - however nothing replaces the expansive views, fresh air, breathtaking nature, and incredibly passionate and welcoming winemakers, brewers, farmers, restauranteurs, and shopkeepers of the finger lakes region.
Kate Evans purchased this House in 2018
Why Kate Evans chose Watkins Glen
We were invited to a wedding at a nearby lake, and by chance we decided to extend into a little vacation. That visit refreshed our souls and our palates so much that we yearned to return. A yearly trip became a biannual, then four times, etc. Then we decided to purchase a home of our own. We are owners of a beautiful 1910 restored rowhome in the city of Philadelphia, most of which we restored ourselves. When we saw this incredibly beautiful original woodwork, completely intact, we had to have it. All this, in our favorite village, near our favorite wineries, with an incredible view.
What makes this House unique
While our home is a vintage home from 1910, we have updated the paint, retained the woodwork, completely renovated the kitchen and bath, and are in the process of completely renovating the exterior. We are avid historians and architectural restorers, and our home reflects this love. Our home offers a unique experience of beautiful, architecturally important surroundings, with beautiful décor, modern amenities, with an amazing view, in a area full of recreational offerings.

Yes, the house is on a hill, driveway is steep. We had a miscommunication with entry code but it was quickly taken care of. House was clean, well stocked and has character. Beds and couch were comfy. Plenty of games to choose from. Nice having breakfast and coffee on the front porch (and ice cream too)! My friends had a nice conversation with one of the neighbors. Great stay! Thank you!
Everything was as stated. Easy walk to restaurants and bars.
Historic, Charming, Beautiful Lakeview But Needs Some Upkeep
The house was clearly historic, quite charming, had great views of the lake, and we enjoyed spending time in the living area which was a very family friendly space. The beds were fairly comfortable as well, though the room we were in had no curtains, so there was no "sleeping in" due to the abundance of light. It was extremely cold outside, but the heating system worked great - we were never cold in the house. The kitchen had everything that I needed to cook with and there was plenty of counter space. The house was very cozy!
We did find that it was in need of maintenance. Most of the light fixtures had bulbs out, the ceiling fans squeaked, and most frustrating was that the hot water heater would only last for 1 short shower and would take almost an hour before it was warm enough for the next person. The refrigerator water filter needed to be changed and every day I would find a puddle of half frozen water on the top shelf. Also, I planned to use the basement laundry; however, the floor was mostly flooded and I didn't feel safe moving about in that environment.
Overall, the house would meet most people's needs, but does need some basic things tended to. The owner was extremely nice while I went through the process of booking the cottage and answered many of my questions before I arrived. The house was acquired this year and I'm sure as time goes on, they will continue to update and improve it while maintaining its true historic roots.
I'm sorry that our home did not meet your expectations. We have local property managers, who live very close by. They are on call to address any and all issues that our guests may experience, to ensure they have the best stay.
I'm sorry that our property managers could not have addressed these concerns during your five day stay, by replacing the light bulbs and having the hot water heater inspected. We have never had this complaint before, thank you for bringing it up, we will have that looked at.
Yes, the basement floods, especially during rainy spring and fall. The home is located on the steep hillside watershed of the lake, and the foundation was laid in 1900. We disclosed that the basement might have water in our description. We are addressing this for the future as best we can (installing a sump pump, and engaging in a major renovation to move the laundry to the first floor), considering the age of the home and its location.
It seems that the refrigerator and freezer settings may have been adjusted by another guest, resulting in the water.
Every bedroom has light filtering blinds, however appreciate your input on getting curtains as well.
I hope you can give us another chance and stay with us again in the future. We take all of our guests suggestions and feedback seriously.
Old home with Style
We stayed here for a long weekend. This is obviously an old house. Floors creaking and the occasional bug . That being said, this place was redone very well. The new kitchen was great. Enjoyed the new and fresh decor. Very homey feel to this quaint house. We brought games to play but we didn't even need to open them because there were so many there. Very close to downtown, just a steep hill in between. I would stay here again as would the rest of my family.
We are so happy you stayed with us. Totally understand there may have been a few flying insects, as you know we were completing the finishing touches like countertops and roof repairs the day you arrived, and folks were going in and out! And yes the hill is steep yet thankfully short (and there are pedestrian stairs down the road, to the right as you leave the house). We don't mind the hill so much because it affords such a view of the lake:)
Thank you so much for your kind words in our guest book: "My family and parents had a wonderful time here! Your place is very nice and we will definitely recommend it to our friends. Thanks for everything!!"
It was a pleasure having you, and we are so happy that all the work we have done was enjoyed by someone who clearly appreciates preserving old world charm while enjoying modern upgrades! We hope to host you again soon!
