About this property

The Owl House! MidCentury Modern Emory, CDC, VA, Decatur Square.

Come listen to our nightly owl serenade! Mid-century modern home with private in-law suite in a quiet neighborhood on residential street. Suite is the entire bottom floor of a 1950’s split-level California style contemporary home. Lots of exposed brick and charm. One bedroom, one bath suite with large living area and private entrance off the back of the house, complete with private outdoor terrace, sitting area, pool in summer, and fire pit in winter. We live on the top two floors but there is a sliding barn door that is locked between your space and ours.
Our house is fun, comfortable, and convenient to everything. We are an easy-going couple that have lived in Decatur and Atlanta for over 30 years. Non-judgemental, we welcome all to our home. There is a small refrigerator/freezer, microwave, toaster oven, and coffee maker with supplies. We provide you with everything you need for your morning coffee or tea along with filtered water. New queen sized pillow top mattress. Towels, sheets, pillows, and blankets provided. No cigarettes, e-cigs, or vaping inside, no incense or candle burning, no guns, no pets, and no drugs. We have an essential oil diffuser, you are welcome to bring any pure essential oils that you like. We offer 3 or 4 scents as well. As this is a one bedroom suite, it is suited best for two people, but we have a daybed or couch that can be used for a third or fourth person and we can provide sheets for the couch.
You have access to all of the lower level and outdoor terrace. We don't use any of those spaces while you are here. General quiet time is midnight to 8 am.
We are available for any needs you might have but allow you the privacy you want when you're staying here. We can greet you and enjoy a glass of wine or a cocktail together, or not. We’d like to at least meet you, since you are staying in our home. We respond quickly by text or even a knock on the barn door as we mostly work from home and one of us is usually here. If you have any questions in advance of your stay, please message us!
Local coffee shops nearby, Starbucks, Sprouts, Whole Foods, and Publix right up the street. Wonderful restaurants all around us, bars, pubs and boutique shops nearby as well. Fantastic wooden boardwalk called the South Peachtree Creek Trail allows a 4.5 mile walk, door to door, even after it rains.
Located 1.7 miles from the Decatur Square and Marta East/West line. Take Marta ($2.50) directly to the Mercedes Benz Stadium, CNN Center, Coca-Cola Museum, and downtown Atlanta without changing Marta trains. Walking distance to Emory, VA, and CDC. Easy access to everywhere in Atlanta via 285 and 75/85. We are long time Atlanta residents that can help guide your way through our fabulous city, recommending restaurants, hiking spots, shops, and, entertainment. Uber and Lyft are approximately $5 to the Decatur Square and $15-$20 to downtown Atlanta.

An peaceful oasis in the heart of Decatur
The owl house is lovely space to spend a weekend or several weeks. The location is especially good for Emory visitors (the Emory shuttle has a stop quite close to the entry of the neighborhood). The owners are delightful and attentive to guests' needs. I hope to stay here again in the future.

A delightful suite!
So much about this property makes you smile and feel welcomed from the first impression on. We were so lucky to stumble on to this listing - at first we were going to stay in a hotel for our Atlanta visit, but I’m so glad we didn’t. The decor, a floor to ceiling collection of classic board games, a well-appointed kitchenette with snacks, coffees and teas, bottled water in the adorable red fridge, a binder full of suggested activities and brochures/maps of the area, and more - this is hospitality at its best! Our teenage daughter found the Murphy bed in the living room area to be super comfortable. We would absolutely without question stay again, and look forward to returning during pool season! :)

Wonderful little getaway!
We had a lovely stay! It was perfect for our little kid free getaway, and only 1.9 miles away from the concert we attended. Joanne and David are amazing hosts, and were so helpful and very kind. We were able to easily find a nature preserve trail close by too, and really enjoyed how conveniently located everything was. Thank you so much for hosting us!

Such a cozy home with amazing hosts
I will admit I usually stay away from homes where the hosts live on property just because I am an introvert but I am so happy my family and I booked this place. The hosts were wonderful and had no problem letting us in even though we arrived late at night. The dwelling was immaculate and you could tell they take pride in keeping it clean and welcoming. We loved coming back from a hot day at the zoo and swimming. Everything was perfect and by far the best experience I've had with any of these apps. Thank you so much!

First time in Georgia
The property was beautiful. It was very comfortable with everything we could need, including some fun vintage games to try. Joanne was so helpful with communications ahead of time and suggestions along the way. Thank you for the visit!

About the host

Host profile image
David and I are an active, upbeat couple who are very into home renovation, mid-century modern furnishings, and retro/vintage decorating. We are always working on some project or another.

David is a videographer/editor by trade, handyman extraordinaire, and loves to laugh. Originally from Upstate NY along the Lake Ontario shoreline, he is the grounded one in the relationship. Joanne is a video editor, foodie, mixologist wanna-be, and general all around goof-ball. She spent her childhood on the beaches of North Florida and she too loves to laugh.

We are interested in all genres of movies, and love to binge watch interesting Netflix/Hulu/Amazon series. We have a loveable cutie-pie Shihtzu named Trixie who is glued at the hip to Joanne. We love to travel and camp and most times take the dog with us. In a previous life we owned a 22' Hunter Sailboat. Sold our boat a few years ago and haven't been on the water much these past few years but, as we near retirement, are hoping to make that a part of our lives again. Most magical trip we've been the Greek Isles.

We have one daughter, a video producer in the DC area, and we now find ourselves with a house much larger that we need.

Our life motto? Making the most of what you've got!

Why they chose this property

If you love eclectic style come stay with us! We saw this house the day it went on the market in 2015 and fell in love. Built in 1952, it is a beautifully maintained post and beam construction, split level home with exposed brick walls on every level. Our furniture is a fascinating blend of antiques from David's family dating back to the 1800s and Joanne's family who's love of atomic modern was passed from mother to daughter. Somehow this house allows both of us to be who we are.

What makes this property unique

The pool is open mid-May to early September. Accessible by registered guests only. You must sign a liability waiver to use pool. No unaccompanied minors allowed. Most Saturday nights, weather permitting, we have dive-in movies. Most will likely be PG-13 and R rated, so age appropriate guests are welcome to join us.
