About Rick and Ellen
We moved to Cook County to be in wild country, with its lakes, forests and wildlife. We built a rustic home in the woods, worked as wilderness rangers in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness with the Forest Service, and now we're retired.
Rick and Ellen purchased this Townhouse in 2018
Why Rick and Ellen chose Tofte
We've enjoyed traveling over the years, and towards the end of every single trip, when we drive over the hill above Duluth and look out at the big lake, we feel like we're home. Of course at that point we still have more than 100 miles to go, but the thing is, it's clear that Lake Superior itself is part of what makes up the idea of home to us. So when we got old enough to start questioning this business of living in a remote location, splitting wood, hauling water and so on, looking for a retirement home beside Superior seemed like a natural thing to do. We're not quite ready to give up the lifestyle to which we've been accustomed for nearly 40 years: living off the grid, using solar power, heating with wood and doing without plumbing. We're very happy to have found Clifftop and look forward to living there full time eventually. In the mean time, we love the idea of giving others the chance to experience Superior close-up from this beautiful lake home.
What makes this Townhouse unique
After our first year at Clifftop, we can say that it’s both perfectly comfortable and perfectly placed, perched as it is above the restless shoreline yet close enough to see and hear Lake Superior any time we pay attention. Having lived here all winter, we can identify a couple of things that make this unit special: the extra light and views due to our corner location, and the use of the decks year-round: we keep them shoveled in winter, which isn’t true of any of the other units available for rent. You'll find lots of written information in our townhome and we can answer any questions you may have about the area we've lived in and enjoyed for the last 40 years. This is a perfect base camp to relax in between your adventures. Come on up and take it all in.

Great location for a getaway.
Beautiful house, ultra clean, well furnished, great location for Grand Marais, nice sound of the waves at night!
Wonderful location to tour the North Shore
We rented this condo, located near Tofte MN, to enjoy hiking the Superior Hiking Trail and visit State Parks. We had a blast! The condo is exactly like it is described. The kitchen is complete making cooking the lake trout we bought in Grand Marais a breeze. The views are wonderful - watching the big lake change hues and moods is spell binding. We would love to stay here again!
This the second summer in a row that we have stayed at this property. It was great last year and it's great this year. Owners are a joy to work with. Love the setting and everything in the condo. Love to come back again!!
This is the perfect location to enjoy the North Shore. Close to great restaurants and cafes, great hiking, Superior National Golf Course, Grand Marais and within minutes to take in the many state parks in the area. We so enjoyed the use of Rick and Ellen's bikes and the tips they gave us for trails to explore. Their home is right on the lake and we were able to take stairs down to the shore. We especially liked sitting out on the upper deck to enjoy a cocktail and listen to the waves hitting the shore. (Also the perfect spot to enjoy a good book!) We had a spectacular view of the moon as it shone over the water. So beautiful! We loved the layout of their home and everything was just as they said it would be; very comfortable and cozy. I stayed here once before with my daughters and this time came back with my husband. I anticipate return visits in our future! Thank you, Rick and Ellen!
Fantastic North Shore Town home
The property was fantastic, even better than the photos show! It was very clean and having a garage and in unit laundry was so helpful. We will be back
Perfect place for a summer retreat
Very clean, organized and accessible. The access to the beach is awesome. We saw the most amazing sunset as the sun lit up the storm clouds. Endless hikes along scenic rivers and waterfalls up and down the north shore. Nice restaurants nearby. Even spent an evening at the Northshore Winery listening to bluegrass music and sampling the various wines. Rick and Ellen are always communicating. Great stay.
Aspenwood is located between Tofte and Lutsen where the Sawtooth Mountains meet Lake Superior. Lutsen skiing and golf are minutes away. Several Superior Hiking Trail access points are close by, with some of the most scenic overlooks in Minnesota: Oberg Mountain, LeVeaux Mountain, Carleton Peak, Moose Mountain.
The Gitchi-Gami Bike Trail is 30 feet away from the front door. Eventually it will extend from Duluth to Canada. Our section runs 11 miles from the Ski Hill Road down the Shore, past Aspenwood, and to the town of Schroeder -- passing over the gorge at Temperance River State Park. From Clifftop, you can bike to the park and hike its trails.
You are welcome to use the two bikes in the garage on the bike trail.
If you bring your mountain bike, there are singletrack bike trails nearby, as well as miles of gravel road mountain biking routes.
The Superior National Forest encompasses much of the land inland from the Highway 61 corridor and offers outstanding recreational opportunities. Rent a canoe from an outfitter for a day trip into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Hike to Eagle Mountain, the highest point in Minnesota. Take your pick of inland lakes and go fishing. Blueberry picking, exploring back roads, bird watching where you may well find boreal chickadees, gray jays, spruce grouse, black backed woodpeckers and other northwoods specialties - all this is possible.
The beautiful artist community of Grand Marais is down the road with good restaurants, shopping, a folk school and Superior beaches.
