Joe and Helene are retired professionals, now living on their farm with their two dogs and six horses. They make hay in June, and live at Playa Lapa for four months of the year. When not making hay or basking in the tropical sun, Joe works part time on the farm and Helene manages Playa Lapa.
Helene purchased this House in 2007
Why Helene chose Puerto Jiménez
They chose this property for its remoteness, abundance of wildlife, and lack of develment. the house was designed by their daughter, Julie, with an emphasis on maximizing living space, excellent air flow and great views of the ocean and tropical jungle.
What makes this House unique
Some of the best fishing in the world; Playa Carate is an important turtle nesting beach; close proximity to Corcovado National park, with abundant wildlife right on the property; and of course the relaxed tropical lifestyle.

heaven - at the end of the road
two of us stayed in this lovely house for 4 days/ nights. very quiet, private, peaceful. Loved the guided tours with kayaks and into Corcodavo. loved the monkeys playing with mangos in the huge trees right outside the house, the birds, the flowers, the jungle, the ocean. Everyone was so kind and helpful.
Unique and amazing place
The house is in an amazing location right on the Pacific Coast a few steps away from a beach which stretches miles in either direction. The capucin monkeys and a coati and scarlet macaws visited the house every day to feed on the various trees around the property. Beto the caretaker was very friendly and cut us some fresh pipas and a pineapple from the garden. Helene helped us with loads of information and organising our tour of Corcovado National Park Would highly recommend this place to stay in if you want to visit the Osa and also stay there in comfort. Thank you!
Thank you so much for your good review!! We all enjoyed having you, you guys were great, the kind of guests we want to see again!!
Observing nature’s splendor at close quarters in luxurious comfort.
The house is very spacious, sitting in its own grounds, surrounded by rainforest and in close proximity to the Pacific Ocean.
There is ample room on the veranda downstairs to sit in one of the rocking chairs, or lounge around in a hammock on the upstairs veranda and just observe all the activity going on around you.
The kitchen is well stocked with all the cooking utensils required and the gas cooker was perfect to cook any sized meal.
The main bedroom was a good size and the mattress was very comfortable.
There was just the two of us, so we had more than enough space.
Helene was very helpful and willing to arrange just about anything that you requested. Helene arranged for Andi, a local taxi driver to meet us off the plane. He was there waiting for us even though we were delayed by over an hour. He then took us to the well stocked supermarket and waited patiently until we were ready to go.
It takes about 1.5 hours to get from Puerto Jimenez to Carate and time was moving on, which meant that Andi would be driving back in the dark, but he still found the time to stop regularly and point out many birds and animals sat by the roadside.
On the way back he was there spot on time, which is very reassuring when you have a morning flight to catch.
If you say to Beto the gardener that you would like to use the Kayaks, he will take them to the lagoon for you and then return them when you have finished.
We went out onto the lagoon for a couple of hours and saw lots of birds at close quarters.
All in all we had a fantastic time and wouldn’t hesitate to return to this house again.
Thank you, Mike for such a thoughtful review!! I do appreciate you mentioning Andi and Beto, they are special, and they really care about our guests. I also appreciate your suggestions, and your comments about the house—a review like that makes it all worthwhile! Hope to see you again soon!
Peace and turtles,
Wonderful stay in Osa
The house is roomy and can sleep 4 comfortably (although there were just 2 of us) and the property is beautiful. Helene and Laura (on-site) were very helpful in making our stay memorable. The house was very comfortable and I loved the fact that there were only screens on all windows.
Apart from a motorbike that we heard along the beach, the only sounds that broke the quiet were from the surf, birds and the monkeys. The area is remote, 7 hour drive from San Jose airport (depending on how quickly you can get through the city traffic) but well worth the trek.
The kitchen was well stocked but lacked the little items such as spices and condiments. The closest big grocery store is an hour away so you have to be very organized for cooking meals as the local mini-mart stocks the basics. The outside shower was good as long as you showered by 4PM otherwise the hot water became tepid.
The beach is amazing and when we were there it was deserted. During our stay we had the beach to ourselves for literally miles in either direction. In our 5 days I think we saw 3 other people on the beach other than in the late afternoon when baby turtles were being released on the beach.
The fact that the house ran on solar power wasn't an issue as we had lots of sun and never ran into a low battery problem in the evenings.
The only 2 negatives. First, the upstairs can be hot even after sundown and so we would have liked a spare set of sheets given that we stayed for 5 nights. A bit of housekeeping to be included (was available for an extra cost) since they have a family that live on the property would have been nice especially since tissues and tp can't be flushed down the toilets. Still, it wasn't a big deal. The only other negative was the wifi which was slow and spotty.
In summary, we would definitely come back, despite the drive.
We are so pleased that you enjoyed the house, the beach and the animals!
The rhythm of off grid jungle life can be a little challenging—it doesn’t usually include hot water as we have at Playa Lapa, but it is “solar” heated, and most guests feel it’s worth the adjustment in timing to have hot water!
I’m glad you got to see baby turtles! And the pics of your Corcovado tour were amazing!
Thank you for your feedback on the linens, I always leave a spare set in the closet. Also, the caretaker is responsible to remove trash as needed, and I will deal with both issues. But as for the spices and condiments, they deteriorate very quickly in the humidity, so we can’t stock those items. I will be sure that is included in the pre-arrival guest info!
Pura Vida, and we look forward to hosting you again!
Beautiful and perfectly remote
What a terrific stay we had at Playa Lapa! Our host Helene was incredibly responsive and helpful and the staff on hand was friendly and welcoming. The house met our expectations and was a great base for Corcovado hiking, kayaking, beach walking, and trips back to Puerto Jimenez for fishing and dolphin watching. The guides we were set up with were professional and made the outings special. So many animals that we saw in Corcovado! Amazing experience and the pictures are a wonderful keepsake to share with friends. Such a great trip! Thanks Helene!
You are so welcome, please come back to us again soon! So glad you enjoyed the casa and the tours— your guides sent great photos, and the staff enjoyed having you!
A most unusual but utterly charming hideaway
We had the most wonderful holiday at Casa Playa Lapa - such a beautiful wooden house rocked by the breezes from the Pacific Ocean and surrounded by the most beautiful garden with only the parakeets and macaws - and the odd troupe of spider monkeys swinging through the palms - for neighbours. The house was so comfortable and well equipped. Loved waking up to the squawks of macaws and the roar of the ocean. Loved the outside shower with humming birds in the hibiscus. Loved the evening swims in the low tide surf. Loved all our tours and brilliantly informative guides - Corcovado with Melvin, waterfall with Maikol, riding with cattle at Finca Bijagual, dolphins, turtles, mangroves, sea snakes, spotted ray, snorkelling and a botanic garden with Pablo, surfing with Chris but ESPECIALLY it was such a bonus to have Laura to advise on all the local info and to take us Kayaking on the lagoon on the first morning, Thank you Helene for all the organisation!
Wow!! What a great review! Thank you for remembering all the guides! They work hard behind the scenes to make your tours memorable! And yes, Laura does add a special touch with her knowledge of the local community! We all appreciate your accolades: from our beautiful casa, the guides, and the caretaker, Thank You!! You are welcome to come back any time!!
and the staff of Playa Lapa
Carate is a remote community on the Pacific shore of the OSA Peninsula, within hiking distance of Corcovado National Park. Casa Playa Lapa is the only beach front rental home in Carate, just steps from the open Pacific surf. The nearby Pejeperrita lagoon, is fed by a fresh water stream between the beach and the casa. Kayaking on the lagoon is a very popular tour in Carate, with 4 kayaks available to Playa Lapa guests. Hiking trails throughout the community and beyond traverse a variety of ecosystems including the watershed, jungle and higher elevations. Pumas, dantas, jaguarundis, anteaters, coatamundis, many varieties of parrots and shore birds, frogs, reptiles and butterflies can be see on the property and surrounding community. Sea turtle nesting occurs throughout the year. Excellent nature photography, each season with its own exciting species--just sit back on one the breezy decks around the casa and enjoy the show!!
