Safety issues for families with small children.
We had an enjoyable stay at Driftwood Cottage and appreciated the welcome pack.
As with all parents our children's safety is of paramount concern and we were particularly alarmed that the rear gate, which opens directly onto the main road to Torquay, had no means of locking!
Non of the electrical products had been safety tested, something we have never experienced in any hotel or rental property before.
The main bedroom downstairs has a glass mirror door opening onto a radiator, inevitably one of our children cracked the glass and could have been seriously injured.
Non of these issues were picked up by the owner or agents, you have been warned!
Wonderful house and location
I have just returned from a long weekend at Driftwood Cottage. The house is so clean, modern and very well furnished and has a wonderfully homely feel. The beach, shops and restaurants/cafes are a very short walk away making this an ideal base.
We have been visiting Shaldon ever since we were children and it is a very special place to us - and now we have found our favourite holiday house too! We spent our afternoons playing battleships and monopoly as a family, the games and books provided making us feel very much at home. With pubs and cafes available so close by, we had a combination of lovely home-cooked lunches and meals out in the evening. The spacious living room meant we could all relax and watch a film together, and the personalised beach theme of the pictures and signs hanging up received many compliments from us! We had a lovely stay and can't wait to return next year.
Beautiful house in a stunning setting.
We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived at Driftwood. It is much more spacious than the photos show and has been decorated with love and care. It felt so welcoming and very much 'home from home'. And we can't commend the comfort of the beds highly enough! We haven't slept so soundly for a long while. The house was spotlessly clean, felt newly decorated and was very warm and cosy. We loved the Ode Café (recommend their ginger Mojitos!), The Clipper Café (fantastic breakfast and views) and our dinner at The London Pub was exceptional. Shaldon is such a pretty place - it felt rather like being in a model village! This is one of those rare finds that you don't want to share with too many people in case it is permanently booked up! We will most definitely return. Thank you!
A Dream Holiday
On entering Driftwood Cottage we were delighted by the feeling of warmth and welcome, the bedrooms were fresh and bright with very comfortable beds, we then went up to the kitchen, dining area and lounge to find the same open cheerful feeling. Definitely a happy house. We were adults without children though you could imagine the house ringing with the laughter of children enjoying themselves. Everything was spotlessly clean and the kitchen was well equipped if you wished to eat in, we ate in for breakfast only. Outside there was a very pleasant garden with an impressive BBQ, we spent our time in the garden in the early evening with a glass of wine before sallying forth to try out the different restaurants in Shaldon of which there are many, and good quality. Some days we sat at the Clipper watching children on the beach and the boats at sea and of course eating a 99. We took the ferry to Teignmouth, drove to Torquay to Torre Abbey ( a must for historians and also modern technology enthusiasts ) steam train and ferry to Dartmouth. There are so many places to visit and so much more of Shaldon to explore that as the meerkats say " We'll be back" A never to be forgotten holiday in a very impressive and lovely house .Thank you
Cosy house with attention to detail
Our second visit to Driftwood was just the tonic we needed. The house has everything that you could need including fishing nets for the children to use. We spent a lovely afternoon on Ness beach, ate fish and chips, went on the little ferry boat to Teignmouth and enjoyed cosy evenings putting the world to rights over a glass or two of wine. Our party comprised 4 adults and 3 children and everyone was happy! Am looking forward to coming back to Driftwood next year.
For those looking for some beach fun, Shaldon Beach offers the perfect excuse for swimming, canoeing, sailing and rowing. For those looking to enjoy a more secluded beach spot, Ness Cove provides a peaceful sanctuary in which to enjoy in the summertime sun, with rock-pools to explore and alfresco BBQ's to enjoy (by booking through Teignbridge District Council).
Wine buffs can savour a day at the Old Walls Vineyard which is located just across the water, and for those looking for a relaxed way to spend the day can take the oldest ferry in the UK from Shaldon to Teignmouth, for a leisurely trip on the water and a day of unhurried sightseeing.
The River Teign Rowing Club and Teignmouth Golf Club, Go-Karting Park, Water Park and the Living Coasts attraction can also be found in the surrounding area and the famous scenic Steam Railway tour, River Boat cruises and Kent’s Cavern are also nearby, to provide a nostalgic and memorable seaside escape along Devon’s picture-perfect coast!
