Disappointing. Barely adequate
No basic kitchen supplies (no dish cloth nor dish towels, no paper towels, no dishwasher tabs, no mixing bowls, no measuring cups nor spoons$ No extra blankets. No pillow cases for the extra pillow. No oven mitts. Multiple burnt out light bulbs. Many empty light sockets. EXTREMELY difficult to open and lock both front and back doot. We had a family Christmas party, the poorly maintained apartment was embarrassing and totally disappointing. I texted the owner Ryan Spurgeon multiple multiple times. He sent Melinda who tried to help us. Melinda was embarrassed and constantly apologizing. The apartment was not worth the money paid, Also Ryan Spurgeon told. Melinda we vacated a whole 24 hours before our contract ended. WE did not leave early. The apartment is in extremely poor condition, It reminds you of a poorly maintained frat house. Multiple sloppy paint. Tons of gouged walls and doorways . Most interior doors scrap the floors. 2 VERY LOUD BARKING PITBULLS came onto our balcony, where my guests were. We are extremely disappointed and embarrassed to hostess our family. The VRBO pictures DO NOT represent accurately the condition of this apartment. We are disgusted and angry.

This is a quirky property but met our needs well. We had issues with VRBO's interface and needed to make some last minute corrections. Mike and his staff adjusted and we were thankful for their good communication.

Wedding weekend
Our expectations were as expected. We read the reviews, and we knew it was an older place, so we did not expect greatness. The place was in good, clean condition with plenty of comfortable beds. Three full bathrooms, which was needed. It was a place for my whole family to fly in together and enjoys our time together while celebrating my nieces wedding. We had a coffe pot, a keurig, enough coffee cups, plenty of towels for all nine of us. Starbucks right behind us and McDonald’s across the street. For the amount of time we spent in the Vrbo it was the perfect place for us. Mike was very responsive and receptive to any questions we had. I highly recommend this place to bring several people together for an event. Keep your expectations on your event and not the place. Great experience!

One night in Ft Wayne
Think this property is better suited to older children & adults. The floor plan is a bit maze like & made it difficult for little ones to comfortably get to the bathrooms during the night. I also worried about the number of bookcases with glass fronts. There were lots of dishes & the kitchen was nicely equipped with the exception of the fact that there were only 2 coffee cups. We also found it unusual that neither the room with the bunk beds or the alcove bedroom had window coverings. We had to improvise!

Women’s Vera Bradley retreat
The house itself was beautiful once you were inside. So many different spaces in the antique furniture and the literature on the place was really cool. No the steps to it, atrocious! Not sure how the back steps are legal. Front steps are better, but still a lot of them. I wouldn’t recommend this particular place if you have any mobile disability. There were six of us, and the listing said sleeps nine. Definitely plenty of space however, there were only six towels and no extra blankets. There is a kitchen that has lots of cooking things if you plan to eat there. There’s a Keurig for coffee, but no coffee cups. The three bathrooms were very convenient. There is immediate parking right behind the house. However, the entrance is very narrow. At one point in time there were four vehicles that were parked there, and it made it very difficult to get in and out (there are guilt renters that share space on both sides of the Airbnb). Overall, the stay was great. We spent time having conversations about what it must’ve looked like when I originally built. Lots of lock doorways that keep you wandering and imagining. Lol! However, I would not have picked this place if I would’ve known about the steps. My mom really struggled and my aunt had to stay in another hotel, because she was unable to climb them.

About the host

I am an old house nerd who lives in downtown Fort Wayne with my wife and 3 wonderful children. I have been blessed to have the opportunity to take disheveled, ignored 100 year old homes, and restore them to their former glory. What a cool life when it turns out that you are really good at something you absolutely love to do. Please come and enjoy these treasures with us!

Why they chose this property

West Central downtown is a magical space where people with souls reside. Sure, you can grab a tan cookie-cutter spot out in the burbs and care about the lawn, but why would you? This is where history, art, and friends meet. The West Central Neighborhood encompasses all of downtown west of Calhoun Street, the heart of West Central is its urban residential area, the development of which began as early as the 1830s. Because of the historic and architectural significance of this area, the West Central Neighborhood was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 and was designated as a Local Historic District as early as 1985.
The West Central Neighborhood was named the “Best Old House Neighborhood” in Indiana in 2010 by “This Old House Magazine.” The north side of the Neighborhood, along Berry and Wayne streets and Washington Boulevard, was where many of the City’s most prominent families built large, stylish homes. On the south side, situated between West Jefferson Boulevard and the former Pennsylvania Railroad tracks, exists a collection of modest, small-scale cottages arranged along narrow, tree-lined, brick streets. Many workers for the businesses and various industries stretching along the south side of the tracks resided in this area. The area opens into downtown, with restaurants, shops, and countless ways to get lost in the city. The Historic Sion Bass House straddles the edge of the neighborhood and downtown. You can be out the door and on an adventure in minutes.
