Misrepresented property and crazily irresponsible owner
We spent over two weeks at Margot's property and it pains me to have to disparage her because I want to be nice, but our experience was not altogether good, and potential customers should know why.
The house is conveniently centrally located and there is a very nice person who manages the arrival process and other questions: Nathalie. (Thanks Nathalie!)
However, the house is difficult to access for people who have difficulty climbing a lot of uneven, dark stairs (not mentioned in the listing). Also, it is advertised as sleeping 11 people, but truthfully, it only sleeps max. 6 people because the basement bedroom is dark and airless, and the third floor has a very low roof (are you under 5ft?) Furthermore, the bathing arrangements were very strange: no shower curtains, and you have to hold the shower head in your hand. Plus, only one wash basin in the whole house! Unless you use the kitchen sink as a wash basin, which I doubt is typical for French people, and certainly not how the house is advertised (one expects full bathrooms).
But my main grievance concerns how Margot extorted me for a repair for damage that my family did not cause (plusminus $500 to put a speaker back on a wall, and spackle). I made a good faith offer of over $100 for any damage we had caused, but she thinks her renters are chumps and pressed for an extortionate amount, so you are warned.
Also, the house has a cat (not mentioned in the listing) He's a very sweet ginger tabby that we didn't mind at all, and he made us less homesick for our cat at home. Frankly, he's the best thing about the place (also Nathalie).
Finally, although the house is advertised as accommodating 11 people, if you do choose to come with more than 6 people, be aware that Margot will charge you extra for every additional person, per night. Read the fine print (I didn't). And be prepared to pay a lot more. Or just rent something else and spare yourself unwanted aggravation.
BEWARE - Deceptive Property Description, Rude Property Manager, Cat on Premises.
First let me say that the Proper Manager (PM) never came to property.
When we arrived it was raining. We waited 10-15 minutes in the rain, then texted the PM who told us we should go to a store approx 10 min away to get the keys. That would have meant that we would have to take our baggage through cobblestone streets in the rain. After some discussion the PM agreed to have a friend bring the keys. We waited about 20 more min in the rain. When the friend arrived she was not able to open the door and had to communicate with the PM via phone to finally get the door open.
The pictures of the apartment show a very nice courtyard with trees. I made the assumptionthat the courtyard was at street level. There is no mention of the fact that there are several flights of stairs that are made of stone, that do not have even surfaces and are steep, treacherous and poorly lighted and, in some places, there is no railing. Most elderly people will not be able to do these stairs.
When we arrived at the house there was a cat inside the apartment. The PM said that the cat did not live there, that it was a stray, and that the cleaning lady must have let it in and that she would clean the unit. There was cat food on top of the frig and the cat made itself at home on the couch and rug in the kitchen. If someone is allergic to cat hair and dander, no amount of cleaning is going to get rid of it to make it immediately habitable. The description of the property says no pets are allowed which would make one assume that there were no pets in the unit. HomeAway told me that just because it says no pets are allowed doesn't mean that the home owner doesn't have to have pets. I think that for health and safety reasons this should have to be disclosed.
As we could not stay there because of the cat, I cannot comment on the rest of the house. However, The furniture in the living room was shabby and damaged due to the clawing of the cat. I have stayed in Montpellier three times and this house is definitely not one of the most beautiful homes in Montpellier as stated on the website.
The PM was mad because we said we couldn’t stay in the house; she was rude, called me a liar and I would not want to have any dealings with her whatsoever.
It has been 8 years since we rented our house and we have never dealt with such a dishonest and rude person. Indeed, we could not be there to receive Phyllis because we had a birthday meal in Sète 45 minutes from Montpellier! We had sent him a message on homlidays to inform him to retrieve the keys and the newsletter that we had prepared! My store is on the way to the station, so it did not make him detour, and the store is not 10 minutes from home, but 4 minutes! If phyllis had received the message on the website, there would not have been any problem: ((((Then for the cat, it's NOT our cat, it belongs to someone in the building, but as we have a yard, he comes regularly to say hello, and the children love to feed him, so yes we have food for him! He can come to the house, but we come out immediately because my husband is also allergic to the cat since his adolescence! We are always welcoming and we organize all the best for our travelers! This opinion is false! Phyllis wanted a personal welcome of palace I think, unfortunately we can not always be there ... ... More reviews on another website that we use more freindly and for longer if you want to make a more sincere opinion! And they are all the opposite of this one
