Howler Monkey haven!
If you like the sound of nature, this is the place. Early every morning, we awoke to the sounds of Howler Monkeys; amazing!
July 2019 Stay in the Canopy House
The hole family really enjoyed the house, the beautiful location, howler monkeys, and even the tarantula in the kitchen one morning. My wife failed to inform me that 4 wheel was recommended to get up the steep drive going in, but we had no problems with our 2 wheel drive, front wheel drive vehicle, though if you are not a highly confident in you driving skills, please get a 4X4 the hill can be tricky.
When we arrived we found the house clean. The water pressure on the second floor is low, the first night my daughter wanted to sit in the hot tub on the second floor, but after filling the tub for over an hour and only being half full she gave up. The only meal we ate at the house was breakfast, and we found everything we needed for that. The wifi also worked very well, though after a thunderstorm on the last night, the wifi went out.
The one thing that was a small issue for us was when we returned to the house after dark on the last day, there was no water. We looked everywhere for someone to contact but could not find an address, map, or phone number anywhere.
Another Issue we had, and I do not believe this was an issue with the "house" but something between our bank and their paypal, but it took nearly 5 days for our security deposit to clear. I do not know why though.
Amazing Wildife Viewing
This house sits in the middle of the jungle, together with some other casas near by - you can occasionally see a light or hear a car, so you're not all alone.. A steep dirt road leads up to it. It is 15 minutes to walk to the nearest beach (beautiful and tropical), a bit longer on the way back as it's steep, but doable if you're in decent shape.
We loved this house because of its amazing wildlife viewing opportunities. Sit on the porch and enjoy: White faced Capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys (eating, sleeping and playing right next to the trees to our house), tree frogs, a sloth, plenty of agoutis and of course birds abound. Hopefully the monkeys will stay, if there's more development in this area with more trees being cut down that might be an issue.
Beds were very comfortable and the mosquito nets kept it bug free and cozy. The bathroom on the second floor is an outdoor bathroom, which was kind of a shock to my teenage daughters, but they got used to it after a while. (Great bird watching even if you're sitting on the toilet!) The kitchen is somewhat basic, but was fine for us 5. I wish there would be more furniture to sit outside on the porch or lounge on the lawn.
Lots of reviews mentioned insects and yes, you will see a lot of them, some of them quite fascinating - we took lots of pictures.
I think this house is even more enjoyable in the summer, we were here over Christmas and the area was quite crowded. Also: Absolutely no snorkeling off the beaches here in December, the sea is way to rough with lots of waves.
This is a beautiful house surrounded by nature.
We loved it here. My teenaged kids and I watched howler and white faced capuchins as well as a mother and baby sloth from the second floor porch. Toucans and a great big iguana way up at the top of a tall tree. We had a few visitors of the exoskeleton kind but that’s to be expected when you’re right in the middle of the action! The howlers went by at 5am most mornings and the jungle noise was 24/7. But it was cool noise!
Near by restaurants were great. The beaches are wonderful and fairly empty. Chocolate tour, jaguar rescue and night jungle walk were highlights for us though if the spiders big you, I don’t recomend the night walk....
The kitchen was stocked with the basics that we needed including coffee. The beds were comfortable. We felt safe and relaxed here. One week was not long enough!
Amazing house in a secluded jungle setting
I really enjoyed my stay at this beautiful house. The house is at the end of a residential road, and feels very secluded, but is still convient to the beaches, restaurants and markets. The three levels of the house provide amazing views of the surrounding jungle. We saw many birds, monkeys, sloths, and frogs. Yes, there will be insects but you need to expect that in a jungle. The kitchen came equipped with all the essential amenities, and bottled water was provided. The property managers were very accessible and easy to communicate with. I recommend this property, and I hope to stay here again!
“To a dull mind all of nature is leaden. To the illumined mind the whole world burns
and sparkles with light.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson -
Upon arriving, I was overwhelmed to the point of tears by The Welcoming Committee
who live all around this spectacular house.
All day, and all night, The Experience, for all one's senses of perception,
is impossible to describe with words.
I compose and record my own music with the hope and prayer that it
will be inspiring, but I can say with certainty that only God could simultaneously
compose, conduct, and play all the parts in the Symphony that i am Blessed
and Privileged to have witnessed here.
Playa Chiquita, 7 Km southern Puerto Viejo, as its name indicates, is a succession of small, white sandy beaches, certain of which are protected by a reef. It's a very friendly/family neighborhood with restaurants, grocery store (where you can find international products), ice cream shop, within walking distance. Our main office is located in Playa Chiquita, next to the school that says "Centro Educativo Playa Chiquita Punta Uva".
