The "Flower Pot" was just as we had hoped. Great working class neighborhood. Three feet from our front door is a nice family owned corner fruit and vegetable store. We could get freshly squeezed OJ every morning and most of the groceries we need. A few feet further was a butcher who cut us t-bone steaks. Across the street is the best taco stand in town. Great restaurant a few steps after that. Nice bakeries nearby. Easy walking distance to San Antonio and always found a cab once we started walking.
First time using VRBO. The casita is just as advertised. Beautiful kitchens and bedrooms, each of which has their own bathroom, uniquely decorated in colourful tile work. Our kids are older teenagers who really took to their space. Housecleaning comes on Wednesdays. We had a problem with one of the gas stoves and a light switch, and the property managers promptly came the next day and had it fixed. The rooftop was a great sanctuary for reading or napping. Thank you for such a lovely new years vacation.
Wonderful house with secret attraction
The "flower pot" is a very well supplied house in a spectacular neighborhood. As someone who comes to San Miguel every year, this was my first experience in Colonia San Antonio, and I was delighted. Everything is here - from "fruterias" to butchers and chicken stores. You are easy walking distance from the Ancha de San Antonio, with its restaurants and the Instituto, and a short walk beyond that to the center of town.
The secret delight of the house is the roof, which is equipped like an outdoor room with grill, refrigerator, sink, bed, even a full bath with a shower. My husband and I worked from this level every day, enjoying the warm air and view of the Parroquia. It's great to have a bathroom on every floor -- so convenient. Everything was charming and worked well. I am glad to be able to put this house on my "will visit again" list.
What a wonderful time we had in the Flowerpot during the Day of the Dead festivities! It is the perfect home base for exploring and enjoying this fantastic town. We could have spent our entire visit on the rooftop terrace, enjoying the view, sun and breeze. However, when we were able to tear ourselves away and venture out, we enjoyed the stroll to the Jardin and the Centro and taking in all of the local color. What a special time we had -- we can't wait to return!
We had an great time spending February and March (2014) at the Flowerpot, and would like to add our names to the long list of excellent reviews that this accommodation has already gathered. Our time there was very enjoyable and we really hated to leave. This place is very comfortable, well equipped, and tastefully decorated. The rooftop area was a great place to relax while getting some sun while just reading, or to entertain company. The Flowerpot is just far enough from Centro to get a bit of exercise while shopping or attending cultural events. However, the immediate neighborhood also has plenty to offer. Next door there is a fruit and vegetable tienda that also sells freshly squeezed orange juice. A few doors away there is an excellent family restaurant (El Rinconcito) and there is another very nice restaurant (El Buen) just a couple of blocks away on San Jorge. There is also a Tortillaria a few steps away and a reasonably stocked grocery store (where English is spoken if that is important). We also really appreciated the local staff as they (Erika and Jonathon) were very prompt and efficient if we had any questions or small problems. Elizabeth was wonderful and we very much enjoyed our interactions with her as well. Overall, we loved this place and will try to get it the next time we come to San Miguel. We will highly recommend the Flowerpot to our relatives and friends.
Beautiful and artistic house
The house was special in every way, far exceeding the pictures on the website--artistically decorated with beautiful tiles in every room, a fully equipped kitchen (where we cooked great food from the local markets), comfortable beds and a fabulous terrace where we spent a great deal of time (including barbecuing). The living room and kitchen open onto a courtyard open to the sky with a fountain and climbing vines and plants. Well placed mirrors in the kitchen and living room open the space even further. Next door is a small grocery store where we got freshly squeezed juice every morning. A couple of doors down is a Tortillaria with freshly made warm tortillas. A couple of blocks away is a Panaderia with fresh bread and pastries. It's a short taxi ride to the Centro Historico (an easy walk for those younger than us); taxis are easily available within a block of the house. Just one comment on an earlier review about the taco stand across the street--open only at night it could be heard from the living room and terrace, but nowhere else. We appreciated having people on the street when we came home at night. Another point, the internet works great in the house and on the terrace, but if one needs to print something or use a desktop, there is an internet cafe across the street. Finally a special mention for Erika. She greeted us at the house with a fresh bouquet of flowers and showed us how everything worked in this sparkling clean house. We got to meet her lovely daughters. She recommended a restaurant around the corner, El Rinconcito, where we had dinner the first night. Thank you for letting us enjoy San Miguel in the best way possible.
Our stay in San Miguel and in this house was pleasant. All dealings with the management company were great. The house is exactly like the photos. However we did not realize it is located on a very busy street, and right across from a very successful taco stand. The traffic was heavy, and the noise and smells from the taco stand did not contribute to the atmosphere. I found the kitchen and livingroom quite dark, not withstanding the centre open air sitting area. A few surprises like the livingroom opening directly onto the street, and the 3rd floor terrazza only accessible through the master bedroom made life interesting.
It was handy having the fruit store right next door, as well as the meat shops, but the 6am truck unloading was eye opening.
All that being said, the house was certainly liveable, and the walk to centre town was not too bad.
I found this guest's review surprising, and the first review I have received where the guest seemed not as delighted as I would have wished. I feel it is important to respond. My casa is located on a tiny cobblestoned street, Calle Clavel, where cars can only go single file. For me, part of the magic is stepping right from the street into the casa into a cool and colorful living room with courtyard just beyond. The neighborhood is lively and yes there is a popular taco stand which operates many evenings, across the way. Prospective guests ALWAYS ask me, is the neighborhood safe? I personally love the fact that when I come home at night there are people in the street enjoying themselves and the delicious local fare. So if you are looking for dead quiet on an isolated street, this is not the place. Aside from that, the interior of the house is cool, which is excellent for hot weather. In cooler weather, the lighting and fireplace keep everything cozy and cheerful. I am always very happy to discuss the casa, it's location, and layout in detail with anyone interested in visiting.
San Miguel is a unique cultural and educational environment. It is known for its two art schools, language and cooking schools, theater, dance, music, festivals, unique shops and wonderful food.
