## Emplacement
We know that Monteux existed in Roman times thanks to the discovery of a few remains, but it's only in the 11th century, when its castle was built, that Monteux appears in history. In 1274, the castle, with its six towers, each fourteen meters high, became the property of the Pope.
Monteux is an important village that spreads out across the fertile plain surrounding Carpentras. The heart of the ancient village of Monteux is enclosed within its 14th-century fortified ramparts.
