## Emplacement
A commune in the Occitanie region of France's Aude département, Sigean is located on the Gulf of Lion in the Mediterranean, not far from the first beaches. Situated in the heart of the Narbonnaise en Méditerranée Regional Nature Park, it lies on the shores of the Bages-Sigean lagoon, three-quarters of an hour's drive from the touristy medieval city of Carcassonne. Occupied since ancient times, Sigean boasted a large oppidum, now destroyed. The town's old center developed in the High Middle Ages, and was destroyed during the wars between Spain and France, due to its location close to the border. A popular tourist destination, the commune is still appreciated for its proximity to the sea, its wine culture and its interesting architectural heritage.
