About this property

The Wanderlust - Downtown Riverside

The Wanderlust is a 129-year-old historic craftsman-style home in Downtown Riverside. It sits within the Heritage Square Historical District, the city's oldest residential neighborhood, and was built by David G. Mitchell, one of the county's founders. It's an easy walk from the Convention Center, Food Lab and Game Lab, and just a couple more blocks from the bustling Downtown Pedestrian Walkway. UC Riverside is close (about 3 miles) and the house is close to the major freeways: the 60/91/215

A visit to see family

Quaint and quirky. The wanderlust property was ideally located to family, The Mission Inn, Mt Rubidoux, and freeways. What may be perceived as dirty in other reviews, I saw more as the age of the house. Mattresses are firm. One helpful thing for the owner is that I would recommend leaving out a new sponge in the kitchen for each guest since you don't have a dishwasher. Although out of the home owner's control, I was irritated that a car was parked directly if front of the VRBO the entire 4 days, not leaving a space for our family to park when they came to visit.

Had to change to a hotel

We chose to stay in the downtown area because it's a great location, and this property has a lot of potential. However, it's poorly managed and somewhat run-down. It's clear that it's being managed remotely, with no local support to address issues. After an eight-hour drive, we got off to a bad start when we didn’t receive the entry instructions until I had to call and ask for them. The bathroom had mold, which ultimately became the deal breaker. Some of the lights didn’t work, and despite contacting the host, they were never fixed. The main room was also very dimly lit. Additionally, I couldn’t connect to any of my streaming services during the stay. The host did agree to change my reservation from two nights to one, but I only received $75 back, even after trying to clarify the refund. Essentially, they doubled the nightly rate and only refunded half of the cleaning deposit, despite the fact that we left the place cleaner than we found it. In the end, we stayed in a well-maintained hotel for much less.

Please do not stay here.

I hate to leave such a negative review but the property was disgusting. It was filthy, the floors were dirty with layers of dust around corners and edges, the sinks were dirty, it looked like someone spit when they brushed their teeth and was never cleaned. Kitchen counters were dirty and the sponge left to use was already used and gross. The shower was disgusting, filthy and unusable. My son and husband showered and the water temperature was practically impossible to get right. You were either being scalded by hot water or it was ice water. There was a load of towels left in the dryer. There was a stiffer left there with a dirty pad, hair on the floors, sink and silverware drawer. My kids have allergies so as soon as we arrived I knew we could not stay another night, wouldn’t have stayed anyways because of the condition. I reached out and was greeted kindly and was told that it was ok to cancel my reservation. I was happy about that. The following day when I reached out to VRBO they said the owner had to cancel and refund. When I reached out again he said he would find out. Then told me it was up to me. I reached out to VRBO and they said that the husband didn’t know how to do it, since they had spoken to him but the wife did. I reached back out and he refused to help. I was extremely disappointed- and frustrated- I thanked him for his “help” and advised I would leave a detailed review- he threatened me by saying he would leave one of me as well. I am still fighting to get a refund- only wish I could leave pictures because I took pictures of everything.

Cozy stay close to the convention center and more

Absolutely loved staying here. We were here with some families from school for a convention. We walked everywhere as it wasn’t more than a 7 minute walk. Gas, food, entertainment all near by. Even a farmers market on the weekend. The house is perfect for the 4 of us. We didn’t spend a lot of time inside, but what was inside was very enjoyable and comfortable.
