Nice owner, but house needs work
Would I stay here again? If I had to, but it wouldn't be my "must return to" house. The owner was very responsive. This was my highest rated aspect of renting this house. So ask your questions!
We were a group of 12. There was enough space for everyone. The kitchen is a good size. There is a table with 4 chairs in the kitchen, so it was nice for prepping food and feeding kids early in the morning. There were enough dishes, utensils, pots and pans and most things you need for cooking. Great! However, there were no coffee filters. Are we supposed to bring those? Not a huge deal, but not super welcoming either. The fridge door wouldn't close - someone had put the drawers in incorrectly before our arrival. The kitchen feels old in general. The sink has hot and cold handles and one of them is impeded from turning by the hose sprayer. Good size kitchen though, with a table in it, good for setting out a buffet or accommodating children.
The dining room is great. Large table, plenty of chairs, though not 13, 2 large futons, a coffee table. It's in the center of the house and we spent a lot of time there. One thing to note - there were nails sticking up out of the wooden floor in this room. Major hazard. We went around with a hammer and pounded them in. Mouse droppings in room corners.
The living room is also nice. Also had nail issues. Two large couches facing each other, a TV in between. Several people could comfortably relax there.
There is one bedroom downstairs and to access the only downstairs bathroom you have to open to the door to this room. Huge problem! In a rental house for 13 people I would expect 2 bathrooms accessible from hallways, without privacy issues.
4 bedrooms upstairs were ok. Our sheets had hair on them. Gross. The door creaked so if your group contains people who will be going to bed at different times, take note. The bathroom upstairs was fine, tub with shower. Water pressure was so-so. Once I found the hair on my sheets I didn't want to use the provided towels. Overall upstairs, I noticed several places where paint is peeling or sheetrock has been patched but not painted.
Overall - this was not a terrible place. It needs updating and paying closer attention to detail in housekeeping and maintenance. We enjoyed our stay mostly because of the company, but I will likely explore other options before coming back to see if anything has changed here.
Owner is responsive, so I believe this house could be revamped and successful.
Valued guest, thank you for bringing these items to our attention. Were glad that your group had a good overall experience at the house! Thats always our goal!
Were less enthused about the imperfections you encountered. This information is extremely valuable to us since as most homes on vrbo are second homes or vacation homes, we are not there freuquently enough ourselves to detect these issues and we rely on guests to keep us informed.
The most concering feedback is that mouse droppings and hair were found during your stay. We have determined that since all linens are laundered after each stay as expected, any stray hairs are the few which were not prevented from clinging during the laundry process. We have added dryer sheets to the process to address this and instucted the caretakers to rewash linens after a close inspection if necessary . Also, we have a long standing contract with orkin to ensure that the house remains pest free. As such, it is surprising that mouse droppings were present. We have notified Orkin.
As for the hazard of flooring nails pegs, this is a drwaback of preserving the appeal of the homes original vintage hardwood floors. The floors are secured with blunt headed flooring pegs rather than standard nails and the pegs do require periodic re-fastening, and are generally in safe condition.
We do realize that a downstairs bathroom with hallway access would be ideal. However, given that The Bearsville Inn is a 150 year old farmhouse which originally had no bathroom and only an outhouse, having not one but two indoor bathrooms is feat of convenience indeed!
Most of our guests have greatly enjoyed the house. We're grateful for this feedback as it helps us to ensure that that continues!!
Fun house for a big group
Thank you for making our Thanksgiving so memorable. The house was clean and well equipped.
House was convenient, spacious and air conditioned.
House met my family's needs. It was near Woodstock and in the midst of the beautiful Catskills. Plenty of room, clean and air conditioned. Only criticism: needs more light at night in order to read.
This was a great place.
SUPER convenient, clean and relaxing. Plenty of room for my expanded family. Right down the way from the town of Woodstock. I will definitely keep this place in my arsenal! Thank you!
It was great!
We had a great experience renting this house. We had 14 people in the house, and although it was tight, everyone was comfortable. The house was clean, and when I had questions ahead of time, they were quickly answered. My daughter thinks we should go on a vacation there each summer. I heard no complaints about the property.
Great house. Caretaker lived next door & was very helpful.
