The apartment was dirty when we checked in. One of the toilets was spattered with feces. Both showers had dirt, hair, and partially used travel sized toiletries. A used towel hung in one of the bathrooms. The other bathroom had one clean towel. The floors were filthy. Dirt, dust, hair, sand, even some pebbles. One of the beds looked slept in. Food crumbs on surfaces. We reached out to the property management company that first day. They assured us that cleaners were coming. The second day and every day after, they assured us that cleaners were coming. No cleaners ever showed. The reps were lying to us. Finally on our last full day, I received a call from the supposed owner. He said it hadn’t been cleaned because he’d sold the property and the listing was supposed to have been taken down. The property shouldn’t have been rented. We paid VRBO and Vacasa good money and they gave us access to a dirty property without the knowledge or permission of the owner. The owner could have shown up at any time and thrown us out or call the cops. Both VRBO and Vacasa said they’re working on this and will make it right but haven’t.
