A Dream Come True
We have always dreamed of staying in an ancient fortress, and we finally had our dream come true. The realilty of this 700-year-old fortress exceeds all the descriptions. It is set on a tranquil hillside with views that rival the best paintings. Apartments are spacious, clean, comfortable, decorated with period furniture and art, and have spectacular views of the countryside below. The kitchens and bathrooms are modern and well supplied. The sitting rooms are large and comfortable, as are the beds. (We viewed them all.) We enjoyed sitting in the courtyard in the evenings watching the birds and imagining life in the 12th Century. Karl and Ingrid are perfect hosts and have thought of everything. Easy two-hour drive from Vienna. Five minutes from Stubenberg and the lake and park. In our seven years experience with Homeaway, this was undoubtedly our best and favorite experience. Highest recommendation!
Unique experience at an amazingly restored castle
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the castle and can only recommend the place to others. The surroundings are beautiful and it's not too far for a day-trip to Graz. We are planning to return whenever we have the opportunity.
Beyond our Wildest Dreams
Staying at Burg Neuhaus was indeed a wonderful experience for the whole family. We had been looking for a castle to stay in during our vacation in Austria for a unique adventure. And we sure got it! Karl and Ingrid are wonderful and charming hosts who took very good care of us. They gave us a tour through the whole castle and told us many fascinating stories about their interesting life.
The rooms were clean and well-kept, very well organized, and colorful. The view from our 3rd floor apartment was stunning with the nearby Stubenbergsee and the mountains in the distance. At night, the stars were beautiful and the sky was so clear that you could see many of the constellations.
Nearby, there are numerous attractions and sights as well as many activities, including swimming in the Stubensee, a great Freizeitpark for the children, the city of Graz or the Katerloch, a limestone cave with stalagmites and stalagtites.
We truly enjoyed our stay and highly recommmend Burg Neuhaus for a special experience during your stay in Austria.
We will be back for sure!
This castle/fortress and the hosts Karl and Ingrid are the real deal.
We stayed with them for five nights in early August 2013 and it was magical. I’m the father of four children and we were traveling with our nanny. Our children are 1, 3, 4, and 5 years old. Karl and Ingrid were great with the kids!
As the listing mentions, you must be willing to walk some stairs. What I now know, is that if you want to be a princess, and live in a castle, you must walk some stairs. ?
The castle/fortress is ultra authentic and full of 200+ year old antiques.
This is an extra great choice if you like: history, military history, architecture, construction, politics or political history. Karl and Ingrid (your hosts) have led a very interesting life as the Austrian ambassador to different countries. Four years as the ambassador to the United States (in NY), six year to France (in Paris) and a bunch of other countries. They both speak fluent English as well as other languages. Be sure to plan some of your holiday time simply hanging out at the castle with Karl and Ingrid and hearing their stories.
One welcome surprise was the hiking trails. The castle is surrounded by well-marked and traveled hiking trails and the area is gorgeous.
The entire region is known for it’s outdoor adventures, the highlights being ballooning, paragliding and visiting the lake. The lake has a beautiful family beach with a water slide that worked well with our young children.
To be repetitive, I really recommend this castle as a holiday place to stay. Five stars!
Great Austrian castle B&B or self catering
This is the perfect accomodation if you like to stay somewhere a little different and exciting. The castle is being carefully restored and the accomodation is comfortable and spacious. Burg Neuhaus is perched on a crag overlooking Stubenberg and approx. 4 miles from the lake and village. Views are spectacular but a car is essential. There are lots of stairs and no lifts so you need to be fit if you're on the third floor. The hosts provide a warm welcome, a great breakfast and advice so you get the best out of your stay in the area. Self catering is an option if you rent the 3rd floor suites which have kitchens. I will return to this property in the future and recommend it to friends
It was a great pleasure for Ingrid and myself to host you with your family and friends in our medieval Styrian fortress. We were happy to meet your Austrian friends and enjoied the wine-tasting which they had organized for you in our courtyard. We also believe that your children had fun not only in the castle but also with the many attractions offered by our region. It was without exaggeration that you exclaimed with the King in William Shakespesre's Macbeth:
This castle hath a pleasant seat; the air
Nimbly and sweetly recommends itself
Unto our gente senses.
Hoping to see you again
I agree with everything written in the review of 17th August 2011 so I can't add much. This was an unforgettable experience. As well as the superb location & amazing views, the Austrian hospitality made this a truly memorable holiday. Karl & Ingrid are very interesting people & wonderful hosts. They were very good with the children - 3 boys of 5, 7 & 9 - who need lots of space, which the castle certainly provided. I feel privileged to have had a very different & special holiday. Thank you Karl & Ingrid.
