About Guy Berryessa
Two dads, biologist and ESL teacher, with two beautiful girls. We bought our little piece of paradise to spend much of our summers and dream of living there full-time one day. Originally from Virginia and Utah, currently living in San Francisco primarily, but have lived in DC, NY, Germany, Sweden, Korea, Thailand & Nigeria, so welcome guests from all over the world.
Guy Berryessa purchased this Apartment in 2004
Why Guy Berryessa chose Papaikou
Besides the home with all its beautiful woods, we fell in love with the very convenient, yet peaceful location and the beautiful, lush surroundings and yard.
What makes this Apartment unique
Its location on a stream with waterfall and swim ponds is a bit of heaven for us and a perfect escape from city living for us, our kids and our guests. Yet only a 5 minute, beautiful drive to downtown Hilo, its many ethnic restaurants, shops, museums, etc. And even closer to nice beaches, great botanical garden and scenic drives.

Great value, location, and quality property!
This is a wonderfully appointed property with everything you need. Close to Hilo and many attractions.
This property is a great find and perfect location for Hilo. The house itself was immaculate and the grounds are beautiful including the waterfall (just beware of fire ants). We appreciated the beach towels and snorkel gear! Would rebook and recommend!
Great property, great value, great communication!
Great property, great value, great communication! Guy helped us out when I screwed up our scheduling - saved me big recovery stress. I recommend this property highly! Thanks Guy!
Comfortable, close to Hilo, fantastic neighbors!
Will definitely be a return customer!
Perfect location north of Hilo
One of three rentals we enjoyed on the Big Island. Overall, we were very pleased with our stay at Enoka Place. Guy was very quick to answer all my questions. He also provides a great blog with excellent information and advice. This is an airy basement apartment with lots of windows and good light. Tenants stay in the main house. [Expect lots of Coqui frogs singing] The location and distance from Hilo was the reason I chose to stay here. Perfect location for all Hilo and the Hamakua coast botanical gardens, waterfalls and scenic drives yet with the opportunity for an afternoon nap in between. We enjoyed being in a quiet forested location, but being close enough to Hilo to go out for a meal or shaved ice!
The apartment was very clean with no damp smell. We had to empty out the dehumidifier each morning and evening but the place has vent windows so you are dehumidifying the entire outdoors! Both beds are in one room but are very comfortable with very nice linens. Guy, you might consider creating two sleeping spaces, each with a little sitting area rather than both beds in one room. Not a big deal for us but might be nice for sharing couples. Early risers get kitchen side! Regardless, so much better than being cooped up in a hotel room!
The kitchen was well equipped and offered what we needed. It’s nice to be able to breakfast in with fruit salad from the farmer’s market, cereal, yogurt and such when traveling with family. The hotplate was sufficient for our needs as we took advantage of the proximity to Hilo for bigger meals. Thank you for opening up your home to travelers!
Convenient location with private waterfall and swimming hole = perfect.
My husband and I had a great time staying in Guy and Trey's 1 bedroom apt. Communication was great beforehand as it is hard to find in the dark no doubt. It is a basement but the amenities are fabulous and the king bed super comfy. The grounds were beautiful and peaceful. Every morning we'd trek down to the waterfall and have a swim (it is colder than you'd think and wear bug spray for best results and beware of phantom branches if you're into jumping -- but absolutely worth it). The location of this place is great: a few minutes' drive to Hilo, a few minutes north to the botanical gardens (and that road it's on was also very cool!). An hour north is Waipi'o Valley and Mauna Kea is about an hour west. Did we mention the awesome waterfall? I mean, if you're into that. Thank you so much, Guy! We're recommending this place to everyone traveling to the Big Island.
