About Alec Smyth
My wife and I are both management consultants who have traveled widely for decades, and have developed a strong sense of what we like in a locale and in accommodations. We actively manage our vacation rentals as a future retirement plan, but we select and prepare them by asking a simple test question -- would we be happy to live in them ourselves?
Alec Smyth purchased this Townhouse in 2012
Why Alec Smyth chose Eastern Market
We picked this home expressly for vacation rental use, with the hindsight of having lived in this area for close to twenty years. It is just ideally situated with a combination of easy access to the major sites, and quiet once back home.
What makes this Townhouse unique
There is a lot to see in Washington, with over fifty museums, but unfortunately we feature the very longest commutes in the nation. The museums have no parking, which may be a deliberate strategy to reduce the number of cars. Capitol Hill is the area immediately surrounding the US Capitol, and because it is a historical conservation neighborhood of small houses that cannot be altered, it contains almost no hotels. By staying at a home on the Western edge of Capitol Hill, you are closer to the sites than at a hotel, and free from the hassles of commuting because everything is within walking distance. Quite aside from the convenience of the location, both house and neighborhood are charming.

Fantastically situated on Capital Hill in DC with easy access to union station/metro and all of DC.
We appreciated the location near Union Station and the Capitol; safe neighborhood and easy access to everything. The fully equipped, updated kitchen and laundry were also a great plus.
Lovely historic townhouse in NE DC
We loved the unit. I particularly appreciated the well stocked kitchen. It had plenty of room for us and was close to the circulator and metro/union station. We had a great week in DC despite the the AC breaking. Alec was quick to get us temporary air conditioners and get it fixed.
Our only disappointment was that Several of the nearby restaurants on restaurant row around the corner seem to have closed. The trendy places to eat were about a half mile walk. There was a tasty new one, Pho place by Union pub, that we loved.
Thanks for a great stay.
Walking distance to the capital
Walking distance to the capital. We were able to make it to the Supreme Court, the House and the Senate, and all the wonderful Smithsonian museums. Close restaurants. Very nice property.
Perfect for our family of 5.
Walking distance to groceries, restaurants and metro. Perfect for families.
Excellent location and set up. All needs were met and Alec was a great resource. The location was perfect for us, with easy Uber access and in a quiet part of Capital Hill. We will certainly recommend this location and owner to anyone who's traveling to DC.
The house is located on a quiet side street street only steps from Restaurant Row, a block of restaurants with tables right on the sidewalk, and one block from Stanton Park, which is ideal for small children. Union Station, the epicenter of tour excursions, is only three block from the house.
Capitol Hill is a historical conservation neighborhood of beautifully maintained, charming old houses. It has a small-town feel and a human scale, is cosmopolitan, and has a thriving cultural scene. The residential area closest to Washington's institutions, it is home to a large number of politicians and VIPs.
The Senate buildings are only three short blocks from the house, and beyond them is the National Mall with the principal tourist attractions of Washington.
