Map
DISTANCE FROM NEAREST AIRPORT - 1 1/4 hr. by car --
CAR RECOMMENDED? - Yes --
We are located 1 1/4 hrs. drive west of the international airport in San Jose, in the town of Tarcoles. It is about 20 min. north of the major tourist city, Jaco, which is known for its great surfing. As an alternative, you can also drive from the international airport in Liberia, Guanacaste to Casa Sammie in 2 1/2 hrs.
Some of our guests do not rent a car, as you can walk to several restaurants and pick up needed items at the mini-supers in town. Transportation can always be arranged by bus, taxi, or private transport. If you want to do a lot of touring, we recommend that you have a car for more flexibility in visiting the many natural areas and parks within an easy drive of the house, such as the Tarcoles Riverboat Tour, Carara Park and spectacular waterfalls. Manuel Antonio Park, a beautiful reserve where you can see monkeys, sloths and iguanas is a scenic 1 1/2 hrs. drive south.
Unless you are planning on going to places which are well off the beaten track, there is no need to rent a 4 X 4, regardless of what many of the sites suggest. We have traveled Costa Rica extensively over 18+ years and have never required a 4 X 4.

Ask a questionAbout Larry & Lynn Green
We're a Canadian couple, married for over 50 years, who have been travelling to Costa Rica several times a year since 2000. We have 3 married children, 5 wonderful grandchildren and assorted grand-dogs.
Larry & Lynn Green purchased this house in 2005
Why Larry & Lynn Green chose Tarcoles
After travelling throughout Costa Rica for 4 years we decided to buy in Tarcoles. Our decision was based on the fact that it's one of the only places left where you see the beautiful Scarlet Macaws every day. Another important factor was that it's located just over one hour from the San Jose airport, which makes it very handy for us, and our guests, to get to. It's also centrally located for easy access to many of the attractions that tourists want to see.
What makes this house unique
As we're in a small fishing village, not a tourist town or gated community, you will have a chance to see what life in Costa Rica is really like. You'll see fishermen walking down the road with their daily catch, kids playing soccer just down the road, locals swimming in the river at the end of the road, Peepo getting a load of sand with his team of oxen, as well as many other local sights. We have lots of birds, iguanas, butterflys, etc. who come to visit daily, as we've spent time improving the gardens around the pool and at the side of the house in order to attract them. You'll always be surrounded by flowers as you float in the private pool or walk through the property. The views of the sun setting over the ocean, from our raised gazebo, are truly stunning. Many guests have told us that it's the 'room' that they use the most.
