Firehouse 17

Experience the Rose City of yesteryear at this one-of-a-kind guest suite on the ground floor of Firehouse 17, a true landmark of Northwest Portland and a showcase of expert craftsmanship and over a century of local history.

Built in 1912 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987, Firehouse 17 was originally designed by Portland Battalion Chief Lee Gray Holden to house a horse-drawn ladder truck and steam pumper. In recent years, the iconic brick building that once sheltered five horses and roughly half a dozen firefighters was expertly restored by a top-notch team of engineers, artists, woodworkers, stonemasons, and designers.

The location in the historic Alphabet District of Northwest Portland couldn't be better. You'll be one block off Northwest 23rd Avenue, which is lined with renowned restaurants, bakeries, and boutiques of all stripes. Providence Park, Forest Park (via the Lower Macleay Park trailhead), the Pearl District, and downtown Portland are all within a one-mile stroll as well.

Details of richly hued wood, classic subway tile, antique furnishings, and exposed duct work adorn the ground-floor interior. The lofty living room is a large, open space with screens separating a cozy sleeping area, a sitting room with leather seating and a 47-inch smart TV, and a billiard room by the carriage doors (with the firepole hiding in the corner). There's even a well-equipped kitchen with every essential, including two dining tables and radiant floor heat.

In addition to the sleeping space screened off in the living room, there's one separate bedroom with a smart TV and a desk workspace where you can log onto the complimentary WiFi. A full bathroom with beautiful stone and tilework, a private laundry room, and AC are provided as well.

Coolest spot in town!
The Fire house was such a fun, interesting and relaxing place to stay! Not only was the place full of character and charm, it was equally comfortable and welcoming. The place is much bigger than I anticipated when seeing it online. I was so impressed with the history and the decorations really help round out the story. There also remained a lot of mystery behind the place, given the shear size of the property. Seemed to have multiple units that I could not quite grasp, but that also made for a table conversation. The location was wonderful, as we walked to many fantastic restaurants and retail stores, with groceries also within walking distance. I would highly recommend this place to anyone, especially if you like a little character and historical significance!

We stayed here for a few days and had a great time. Place was easy to find and in a fantastic neighborhood, easy to get to and walk around to shops and restaurants. Hosts were nice when we had a question. Definitely would come here again!!

Perfect all around- extended just to keep the location!
The firehouse was perfectly located- not only was the location great but the neighborhood- including the neighbors, management company and host were warming. This firehouse and entire experience was so good- we decided to extend our stay another 5 days instead of traveling the coast as originally planned. A retired guy, Larry, across is a retiree and enjoys his day reading in his yard. He was delightful, there is a self help club across the street, and around the corner you can find everything from a toy store to a more mature scene- all seemed very safe. My daughter wanted to bake a cake to thank our host- but I suggested taking care of and Leaving the place extra clean would make her happier. Five stars for sure and we will stay at the firehouse every time we visit Portland which hopefully will be soon! Also be sure to look for beautiful foliage a half block away called Lamb’s ear- this was the cherry on the cake which made this trip the best VRBO house to date for us! Too many pleasant surprises to even mention- and we didn’t find out about ghost busters until our 4th night!
