About Linda Wiebe
My husband and I grew up in the Vancouver, British Columbia area. Like many, we have always had a love for travel. In the Spring of 2006 we decided to take an extended vacation to France. We sold our home, basically put our memories in a box and said good-bye to our three adult children. It didn't take long to unwind and to relax into the French lifestyle. The 'break' soon turned into months and before long it was apparent that we wanted to come back here every year for an extended stay. That is when we started thinking about co-ownership and our version of a home-share 'My vacation home in France' was born. The village of La Charite-sur-Loire fit all of our criteria. We purchased a few homes and went to work restoring them. We developed a business plan and sold the shares in the house under a Canadian company. When the house is not being enjoyed by its owners, it is available for rental.
Linda Wiebe purchased this Cottage in 2009
What makes this Cottage unique
La Charité is a medieval village set in the middle of wine country on the Loire. A music and book town by theme with many concerts and festivals. Sancerre, Pouilly-sur-Loire and other quaint wine hamlets are all at your doorstep. Renaissance and Medieval castles dot the countryside and are as near as a 10 min. drive. You can even visit 'Guedelon' and observe first hand the construction of a 13th century chateau. Cycling here is gentle and easy with bike paths following the Loire or quiet country roads leading you through the vineyards and sunflowers to picturesque villages like 'Apremont-sur-Allier' listed as one of the most beautiful villages of France. Cyclo-rail is another option this uses carts on the old rail tracks taking you over the river from Cosne to Sancerre. You can rent a canoe and paddle down the river to the next town, get out, have lunch and a wine tasting, be picked up by your guide and be brought back to La Charité all for about 12 euros (not including lunch) If gaming is your thing, there is a casino about 15 min away, or check out the F 1 race track at Magny Cours just 35 min away. If a slower pace is what you are after, maybe you would like a little antiquing, every village in the area has an annual 'Brocante' and town fair on the week-ends, sometimes like the 'frog festival 'in 'Mesves' in May or the fair of specialty foods and wines of the region' Salon du Gout' in La Charité May 6-8. Golf, swim, walk, hike, cycle or drive; the adventures are waiting here for you.

Quirky but comfortable home from home in the Loire region.
Good location in the town, with just a short walk to the centre and the main points of interest. Excellent location in terms of the local vineyards (Sancerre and Pouilly) and opportunities for visiting the vineyards and tasting the wines.
The only real problem we had is that parking locally is extremely limited with most bays being used (naturally enough) by local residents. The house does not have a dedicated space . Also, there are very low beams on one side of the bedroom, and the staircase is somewhat awkward. We are old, but mobile, so we managed all right, but I anticipate that someone less mobile could find this an issue.
We very much enjoyed using the terrace for our meals, and just for sitting outside and reading - the weather was hot and sunny during our visit. We enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to recommend the property to friends, with the above caveats if appropriate.
Always a treat!
We've stayed here several times before and it was great to be in La Charite again for 2 weeks. The character of the old stone cottage makes it fun and the modern updates make it comfortable and an easy place to relax. The cottage is well-equipped and perfectly located, with the village and the Loire a short and pleasant walk away. Linda and Len have gone out of their way to anticipate everything we might need in the kitchen, so we enjoyed cooking some of our meals and eating on the small patio. Delightful!
After so many repeat visits, we will miss seeing you his year. I hope that you continue to bike around Europe and come back and visit us in La Charité!
The cottage exceeded my expectations! From the living area and kitchen, to the bathroom and the loft bedroom it has everything you will need for your stay. It is well situated in the town and close to very good restaurants. It is the most charming accommodation I have ever stayed in!
Quaint, friendly village - perfect place to stay!
We stayed for a week in September at this well appointed stone cottage. The place suits two perfectly - everything is there for the guest's convenience. The kitchen is amazing with a large stove, dishwasher and all the dishes, glasses pots and pans you will ever need. Nothing was neglected when the renovations were done - a huge walk in shower with a rain head - glorious. The loft bedroom was very romantic and includes a small bathroom. The skylights open to let in fresh air. The small terrace was great for a sitting and enjoying a glass of wine.
We had perfect, warm fall weather during our stay. Would recommend renting bikes at the tourist office for a leisurely bike ride to Pouilly. Also took a road trip with the rental car - one of the many trips Linda has designed for guests. The town is walkable and although there is little English spoken, we had no trouble communicating with our limited French. Wonderful Saturday market as well. Linda was very good at communicating details as we were planning our trip. Highly recommend this place - way, way better than any hotel! The photos are good but it's better in person.
We are so happy that you enjoyed staying in our cottage, we make every effort to ensure that our guests have a comfortable stay and enjoy their experience in the town. I am glad that you enjoyed my "self-guided" day trip ideas and got out and explored the beautiful countryside and neighbouring villages. This area of France is magnificent and definitely off the tourist trail!
Rural France cottage
The stone cottage was great with its modern appliances and conveniences, a great value that sure beats a hotel room. The Canadian owners were very helpful with local tour suggestions prior to our trip and they had books at the cottage for even more trips. Manuals were available for the appliances and numbers to call for assistance if required. Due to the cool rainy weather, the cottage was cool even with electric heaters. We would recommend this cottage for anyone who wants to experience rural France, wineries and interesting small towns. Had a great meal at L'Auberge de Seyr and would certainly recommend it. Locals were friendly and helpful.
A week in the village of Books
We loved our time spent in this beautifully restored cottage-quaint but with all the modern conveniences. The owners helped to insure our enjoyment of the area by providing detailed notes and maps of interesting trips and restaurants. Some of our favourites were watching boats go through the canal locks at Gimouille,(rec the Auberge de Pecheurs restaurant),the beautiful village and Floral Gardens of Apremont-sur Allier, wine tasting and buying in Pouilly-sur-Loire,following the red line for the historic tour of the hill top town of Sancerre and a private tour by the owner of the ancient abbey of Fontmorigny.
We enjoyed most just wandering around La Charite.-walking through thd local market,up to the ramparts for great views and browsing the cathedral and grounds. We were fortunate to be there during the unique "festival of words" in this Village du Livres and loved all the brightly coloured MOTS floating above the streets and the quotations in the shop windows and on walls and houses(had fun trying to translate these)
Probably our favourite restaurant was the Auberge Poule Noire run by two very friendly sisters-sat on the patio looking up at the Cathedral.Had a great lunch at Eva and Babette(washed down with a local beer) and delicious pizza at Saint Pa.
Thanks for another memorable travel experience.
La Charité is located in Burgundy but also in the Loire wine region near the famous Sancerre & Pouilly-Fume Vineyards.
Enjoy the weekly out-door markets and many music and cultural festivals in and around our town that take place throughout the year.
