About Alec Smyth
My wife and I are both management consultants who have traveled widely for decades, and have developed a strong sense of what we like in a locale and in accommodations. We actively manage our vacation rentals as a future retirement plan, but we select and prepare them by asking a simple test question -- would we be happy to live in them ourselves?
Alec Smyth purchased this Townhouse in 2010
Why Alec Smyth chose Eastern Market
We picked this home expressly for vacation rental use, with the hindsight of having lived in this area for close to twenty years. It is just ideally situated with a combination of easy access to the major sites, and quiet once back home.
What makes this Townhouse unique
There is a lot to see in Washington, with over fifty museums, but unfortunately we feature the very longest commutes in the nation. The museums have no parking, which may be a deliberate strategy to reduce the number of cars. Capitol Hill is the area immediately surrounding the US Capitol, and because it is a historical conservation neighborhood of small houses that cannot be altered, it contains almost no hotels. By staying at a home on the Western edge of Capitol Hill, you are closer to the sites than at a hotel, and free from the hassles of commuting because everything is within walking distance. Quite aside from the convenience of the location, both house and neighborhood are charming.

Hidden gem in DC
Easy to get to. Cozy and homey feeling immediately upon entry. Close enough to everything yet far enough away to disappear at the end of day.
Wonderful Location, Property and Experience
The property is well kept and clean, the neighborhood atmosphere is enjoyable and you can’t beat the location. The owner was very helpful. We’d definitely stay again!
Not a single disappointment. Excellent.
Great place to stay in DC. Walked everywhere with my 7 y/o granddaughter. Safe and close.
Fabulous Thanksgiving home-away-from-home
For Thanksgiving, we came to DC to meet our two daughters, both of whom now live there. Stanton House proved to be a perfect venue. The living room with the cozy fireplace was a wonderful gathering place to talk and just be together. There are a plethora of great restaurants within a 15 minute walk and the neighborhood is beautiful and very quiet, which was very much an exception to much of what we have experienced elsewhere in town. The unit had everything we needed and I cannot think of how our experience could be improved upon.
We had a great week in Washington, D.C.
My family of four (we have two teenage sons) had a great week in Washington, D.C. This house was in a great location and was close to everything. It was clean and the towels and bedding were comfortable. The book the owner Alec put together for guests was very helpful and we referred to it throughout the week. I wish more VRBO's would do this. To get around town, we walked, used the Metro to go further distances (like Arlington Cemetery, Mount Vernon) and used Lyft/Uber for shorter in town jaunts. The Metro stop was a good 15 + minute walk from the apartment so it often made more sense to pay $8-10 for all of us to get an uber/lyft to the white house or the Mall area to see the monuments. There is a small grocery store within walking distance and a few breakfast places. We used uber eats a few times to eat dinner at home since we were tired from walking 6+ miles everyday. There are curtains in all the rooms to try and block out the light but if you are sensitive to noise bring earplugs. This is on a small city street, with normal city noises. The owner was easy to reach and communicate with. We would stay here again. Thank you Alec!
A charming place
We spent our Labor Day long weekend at this beautiful apartment. The place had everything we needed, the neighborhood is quiet and safe for us to walk around. We had a great time here!
The house is located on a quiet friendly street less than half a block from Stanton Park and one block from Restaurant Row, a block of restaurants with tables right on the sidewalk. Capitol Hill is a historical conservation neighborhood of beautifully maintained, charming old houses. It has a small-town feel and a human scale, is cosmopolitan, and has a thriving cultural scene. The residential area closest to Washington's institutions, it is home to a large number of politicians and VIPs.
