About Kerstin Preyasi Exter
We sailed to Hawaii from the South Pacific in 1991 and the Island welcomed us so much that we are still here today! We love to travel and explore new places preferably from a nice , home-like base. We used our travel experiences to create a welcoming home away from home for you. We are woodworkers by trade and have included our expertise as well as our love for detail and beauty into our properties. We love local food and cooking so our kitchen is well equipped. We support sustainability- we have solar power ( with electric back up), we compost and recycle, we have herbs, nuts and fruit in out garden that we are happy to share with you. We both meditate and Kerstin practices yoga. When we are on island we are happy to share our Yoga and meditation shala with our guests.
Kerstin Preyasi Exter purchased this Cottage in 1998
Why Kerstin Preyasi Exter chose Hawi
We got word about this Macadamia orchard from friends who live next door while we were traveling. Since we loved layed-back North Kohala and had lived and fallen in love with Hawi Town already we made an offer sight unseen and proceeded to design and build our little piece of paradise that we now share with travelers.

We spent nearly three months at this lovely cottage and couldn’t be happier. The cottage is beautiful and private with everything you need for a relaxing stay. Atulio and Preyasi are wonderful hosts, friendly and quick to respond to any problems or questions but never intrusive. There are beach towels, umbrella, chairs, snorkels and masks and a boogie board for trips to the beach plus two wonderful day beds on the lanai for relaxing. The cottage and lanai are shaded so they stay nice and cool through the day - no need for air-conditioning. The cottage is surrounded by academia nut trees with smell heavenly when they flower in February. We were treated to fresh passion fruit, papayas and bananas from the garden. We woke up every morning (early!) to the sound of roosters, turkeys, cardinals and doves. We would occasionally hear cattle lowing in the evenings.
Hawi is a lovely small town with good restaurants, artsy stores, and a strong sense of community. There is a farmer’s market every Saturday and many locals gather at the coffee shop in the morning for breakfast or at Mahukona (an abandoned pier once used for transport of sugar) for a swim or snorkelling in the afternoon. There are also good beaches for swimming and snorkelling a few miles further down the road towards Waikoloa. Our favourites were Spenser Beach for swimming and Waialea Beach (Beach 69) for snorkeling.
In short, this is a wonderful place to chill-out, relax and enjoy the quiet side of Hawaiian life.
The cottage was exactly as described. Secluded, comfortable, clean, great ambiance. We especially enjoyed reading and relaxing on the lanai during the rainy evenings. We'll definitely return next time we come to the Big Island. Mahalo! Linda and Tom
Perfect place in a perfect location
Everything about our month in the “Garden Cottage “ was perfect. From the clean very well appointed and equipped cottage to the fresh fruit that kept showing up on the lani, we couldn’t be more satisfied.
Atulyo & Preyasi were first rate hosts. They know how to make you feel welcome.
This is our second time here and hopefully not our last at this quiet cottage tucked away in lush foliage. It has everything we need including very responsive and friendly management.
Absolutely loved it! So remote & relaxing! The inside was beautiful & clean! Recommended already!
It was a nice house and good location.
A little disappointed about the paper goods (had to buy tissues and ran out of paper towels and toilet paper. I was confused about check out - I thought that I could check out at 3. We were out by 11 as stated by the woman who called me. I just remembered that I left clean towels in the washer but this should be okay because we were told that the cleaning lady was coming at 11. I washed all the sheets and folded them and put them on the bed.
We leave a standard amount of paper goods for every guest and furnish more upon request. If we had known we would have gladly supplied more.
Our standard check out is at 11 am as stated on the HomeAway site and in the rental contract. Upon request we may give a later check out when possible if you request it at the time of booking, In this case for a same day guest change over it was not possible.
