Unmatched, but ...
This is my second stay at Birdhouse and once again, the experience of Sapelo Island is unmatched. The downside of the stay was all night clanking of the loose roof sheeting during a windy storm. I did get to meet some lovely campers when they came over to offer help so they could sleep too.
Absolutely loved it!
The house was beyond our expectations -- big, beautiful, nicely decorated and the latest in appliances and technology (TV, Wi-Fi, Sonos sound system, etc.). The next time we come to Sapelo, this house will be our first choice for a place to stay. While we were touring the island, we scouted other places we had considered staying, and none of them were anywhere near as nice as this one in terms of location and overall appeal.
Nothing else like it! Something for everyone!
What a gorgeous place! Massive screened porch with an ocean view, massive HD TV (for those of you who need it...), way too many other wonderful things to fit in this tiny review box! This is all neatly tucked away on a little known island frozen in time. Sapelo island truly has something for just about anyone...history buffs, nature lovers, beach-goers, couch potatoes, fishermen, etc... I was truly blown away by the majesty of this special place. I mainly wanted a vacation for relaxation and decompression...I got plenty of that, but so much more. The cottage is such a nice place to retreat after a long day of exploring. Furnished to the brim with every modern comfort, yet rustic and peaceful too. The staff were very friendly and helpful, they provided directions, tips, they even offered tours and fishing guides. I would highly recommend this place to all of my family and friends. Oh! And one last thing...if you love the beach like I do, and you don't exactly love the way you look in a swimsuit (like me), you will not have to worry about being seen in your swimsuit. NOBODY is on the beach! They are pristine and deserted most of the time! What a relief to have a beach to myself!
Awesome luxury cottage on fabulous historic island with pristine white sand beaches + fishing!
Four of us plus our Labradoodle stayed here for 7 nights. We were very comfortable and very pleased. The house has an extra large screened porch plus large great room. The steps leading up to the house are very easy to use if you have health issues. AT&T cell phones don't work in house or on beach but along the paved road to Reynolds Mansion you can check voicemail or make calls. WiFi works great in the house, so bring your laptop! We ate all of our meals on the porch and used the indoor dining table as our pantry for shelf stable foods. The kitchen comes equipped with every gadget imaginable including 3 different coffeemakers, one that grinds! Lots of spices, etc. Bring veggies, breakfast foods, meats, beverages, bait, bug spray, sunscreen. Be sure to visit the Sapelo ferry website to see what they do not allow on the ferry (no oversized coolers, etc.) The very small store sells sodas, beer, some canned goods. Right out front, if the tide is low, you can harvest mussels, oysters and clams, but bring muck boots. We caught two large flounder in the salt water river out front and spent a lot of time sitting by it in the beach chairs provided. The golf cart is a must, and if there are more than two of you, ask about renting an extra. You need it to get to Nannygoat Beach, an expansive white sand beach with huge sand dollars. Don't miss a tour of the Reynolds Mansion, Indian shell mound, lighthouse and Behavior Cemetery. The local Geechee community is warm, friendly and helpful, plus terrific tour guides. Some of them make sweetgrass baskets by advance order. Before you come, read Cornelia Bailey's book God, Dr. Buzzard and the Bolito Man, it's a must read. Sapelo is unique, unspoiled, remote, beautiful, rich with history and teeming with wildlife. Be prepared to leave enchanted. We can't wait to come back!
