About Ron & Susan Oleson
Retired professor. We travel internationally & have two Bichon's. Love to walk on the waterfront and eat the best fresh fish at Mitch's Seafood which is located at the Sport fishing landing. Balboa Park & the Zoo are favorites; Park has the Prado Restaurant which has great happy hour drinks & food; Zoo has Albert's Tree Restaurant which many do not know about; it is breezy & has an African motif.
Ron & Susan Oleson purchased this Apartment in 1990
Why Ron & Susan Oleson chose Golden Hill
We have a vacation home rental & realized our geographic apartment location would be great for its accessibility to all that San Diego offers. We have a century home in front of the apartments & really enjoy San Diego's great sites like our Ball Park, just 3 minutes away & the Gaslamp.
What makes this Apartment unique
Accessibility is key and the airport is so convenient due to our travels that we know those coming to San Diego can benefit from this travel ease. We are about 10 min from the airport
100% refund if cancelled at least 60 days before arrival date.
It was a nice and clean place main point is the bed was super uncomfortable the shower head was a lil confusing but over all nice. Thanks
Perfect for our stay: Noise can be an issue
My sister and I loved our stay here: We loved meals in the garden, the convenience of the transit stops right outside the door, the local market on the same block, coffee shops and awesome restaurants in the area, and overall the place had everything we needed for our stay. The one con is if you have noisy neighbours, which unfortunately happened to us. Noise/ voices carry in this place. We had neighbours (other guests) who woke us up on several occasions during our stay. Don’t stay here if you want to party. Do stay here if you seek a quiet oasis.
Great location for a weekend getaway
This bungalow is located in a great location. There are several restaurants and markets within walking distance of the bungalow. The owner of the property was kind enough to leave his recommendations of places to eat and he was spot on. My wife & I tried every single one. I thought we were going to be far from downtown but we were a lot closer than I thought. I went for a run from the bungalow to Petco Park/Gaslamp Quarter and back. It was only two miles there and two miles back. Not far at all.
It was a nice setting with the gardens and the plants, very unique and informal .
Our stay at the house was pleasant. I recommend the following corrections to make the experience better for the guest .
We were having a difficult time getting any response from Ron and Susan when we would send emails out. It would've been nice for them to get back to us. That's the number one guest request is that the communication is good and available . We found the apartment comfortable. We were looking for cleaning supplies and requested them but there were not any inside the apartment and Ron or Susan did not get back to us on that subject .
The pillowcases in duvet cover we're obviously not clean because they still have the body odor of the previous guest . The bathroom also needed a better cleaning The toilet was dirty and smelled bad .
We like the proximity to the market down the street.we went every morning to get fresh squeezed orange juice
There were more pluses than minuses.
We rented unit #3 upstair for 2 nights. The pluses are: 1.BIG PLUS: Your own garage, no parking spaces around. A Toyota Minivan fits just fine. 2.Fully stocked kitchen with appliances, plates, cups, etc. We saved money on breakfast and dinner by cooking at 'home'. 3.Huge, clean, worked great fridg. Stock it up with your food from a grocery store close by, the next building. 4.cute bathroom w/ LOTS of extra towels. 5. Clean property with basic home amenities you can't find in a hotel room. 6.Nice and friendly owner in person, and his son on the phone. Thank you!!!! Minuses: two super loud A/C units, could hear nothing but those two. 2.Shower drained very slow, pool of water after each shower. 3.Bed squeaked so bad. 4.Floor was not as clean as I prefered, we had to wear socks all the time and they were always dirty. Conclusion: I'd come back for different unit downstair for sure. I prefer to skip those trips up and down 'cute' stairs with luggages in hands. Hopefully they will change the A/C by that time, as the nice gentlemen mentioned to my husband.
San Diego is lovely but disappointed with rental
First: I already reviewed this property fairly. The review was sent back to me saying it had to be redone because I had included the address of the rental. I did not. The EXACT description (location etc.) from the rental ad had been placed at the top of the review before it was returned to me.
Second: Any attempt to resubmit a review in the last 2 weeks has been blocked by a (505 ERROR Oh No) while we are still being hounded to submit a review.
Third: With the information the owner supplied along with the pictures, it takes about 5 mins. with Google Maps to find the exact house, number, street, etc.
This is exactly what I wrote the first time.
Many positive things have been mentioned about this property that don't need repeating. However, the #3 Unit is 430 square feet not 700. All the rooms are rather small. The unit is old and has been patched and repainted many times. The tropical ambience is nice but in the colder months the sun does not penetrate the jungle. The photos for this unit show a sofa but instead there was an uncomfortable futon and one other straight backed chair in the "Living Room". The heaters were very noisy. The unit was not immaculately cleaned (ie. dust and dirt on the window sills and baseboards). In the picture of the bathroom WE missed the fact that there is no counter space and we found it quite awkward. My wife and I have rented different VRBO sites (although mostly in Arizona) but were disappointed with this unit.
The property is located in the heart of Golden Hill, a neighborhood of the original San Diego and has the charm of a historic and old neighborhood. There are several local eateries that you can walk to including a cook your own steaks (Turf Club), Luigi's pizza, stone wood fired pizza, Humbertos, legendary Mexican Food, a couple coffee/sandwhich smoothie shops, Counter Point Wine Bar to name a few. Golden Hill park is down the street with trails that lead to the trails of Balboa Park, which is 4 minutes away as well as the zoo. Golden Hill is about 1 mile up the hill from downtown and makes for a great walk. If you are too tired to walk back, the bus come within a couple blocks of the unit and goes straight there from downtown, the bay and gaslamp. Access to all major San Diego freeways are just a few blocks away.
