10 bedrooms / 6 bathrooms. Your private own private Estate on the Hudson River
About Owen Lipstein
Owen's background is in publishing: at the age of 30, he launched American Health magazine which won the National Magazine Award for Excellence, and later was owner and editor of several other magazines including Psychology Today, Mother Earth News and Spy. The Wall Street Journal called him the 'Wunderkind of the '80s.' Upon moving to the Hudson Valley, he became managing partner and editor-in-chief of InsideOut magazineOwen Lipstein — founder of Shakespeare on the Hudson — says that the next phase of Shakespeare on the Hudson has been 'the biggest project of his lifetime.' Call it, if you will, unfinished business. After purchasing the disparate properties that now make up the grounds of Shakespeare on the Hudson nearly 15 years ago, Owen has steadily been working towards turning it into a fully functioning, self-subsidizing cultural center. Shakespeare on the Hudson not only provides space for private events (such as weddings, parties, and romantic getaways for two), but cultural events, such as readings with authors and live, 'Inside the Actor's Studio'-style interviews with important figures who make the Hudson Valley their home. He also hopes to host adventure weekends for kayaking and rock climbing, organize bird watching retreats, and have storytelling conferences that feature first-time authors to New York Times bestsellers. Shakespeare on the Hudson originally started as a space to stage critically acclaimed productions of Shakespeare's plays. After several seasons of packed houses and positive press, Owen saw the potential for SoH to morph into something more. With the intention of SoH one day becoming a self-sustaining space for a variety of events, he began developing the three houses on the property. The covered bridge made out of Oak and Pine trees harvested from the property and the in-ground heated pool with a light-house and an oak beam porch are just some of the innovative additions.

Why Owen Lipstein chose Catskill
Imagine being able to step into a Thomas Cole painting and see the Hudson River Valley as its first inhabitants must have. With its 100 acres of forest crisscrossed by streams and hiking trails and its near mile of riverfront property, Shakespeare on the Hudson allows its guests the opportunity to turn back the hands of time while still enjoying the comforts of the modern day. This remarkable property is the ideal setting for weddings, corporate retreats and cultural events. Located in Catskill, NY on the shores of the Hudson River, SoH boasts some of the most unique and breathtakingly beautiful property in the Hudson Valley. The two guest houses that comprise the lodging available on site all feature riverfront views that you will find nowhere else, unspoiled by trains, buildings or power lines. At night, the lights from the city of Hudson just across the river are a reminder that there are people out there, somewhere, but our guests delight in their own privacy.
What makes this Estate unique
We believe that the grounds themselves are the most impressive part of Shakespeare on the Hudson. The near 100 acres of land that make up SoH are home to almost every variety of tree native to this area of New York State. Hundreds of species of birds, including herons, bald eagles, hawks and owls can be seen on the property. Deer and red fox abound, creating a magical natural world right outside your doorstep just begging to be explored. The river itself boasts more than 200 species of fish, most notably shad, Atlantic sturgeon, and striped bass, which come swarming up the river from the open ocean in mid-spring. Kayaking, fishing and boating are encouraged as this is one of only a handful of locations along either side of the Hudson that does not require you to cross over train tracks or under huge power lines to access the water.

Wonderful experience, accommodating hosts!
We had a wonderful stay in the house! The hosts were very accommodating and everyone in our group really enjoyed the house. Thank you!
Unique and beautiful wedding venue.
We had a great experience at Shakespeare on the Hudson. The property has a lot to offer and with the amount of space between the two houses we got to spend more time with our guests which was great. Audrey and Ean are both very accommodating and did all they could to make our stay a great one. Guests should expect a rustic stay experience in a big old house, it's charming for what it is, just don't expect the Waldorf Astoria. Very happy we chose Shakespeare for our special day.
Beautiful and private home on the river
What an amazing weekend! The property is large and private, with great views of the river that you can enjoy from the patio. The interior decoration is fantastic as well. Would recommend for any group that wants to relax, grill and unwind.
Beautiful property, both private and accessible
What an idyllic location - overlooking the Hudson (Olana and the Rip Van Winkle Bridge are visible)! The property is very private - down a long driveway - yet the village of Catskill is only a few minutes away. And the Hudson Amtrak station is just a bit further, across the river. The house is large, rambling, funky. Well outfitted kitchen. Sweet swimming pool. Property managers Audrey and Ean are responsive without being intrusive.
Beautiful Wedding Venue and a fun weekend!
We rented both houses for our wedding and it was incredible! We had so many friends and family staying right on the property it felt like the wedding lasted all weekend! We used the Pavillion for our Friday rehearsal party and it worked perfectly for a live band and lots of fun. Having all of our events in the place we were staying was so convenient. We rented two golf carts and a 4x4 utility vehicle which came in really handy for getting between the two houses and transporting people and things up and down the hill. The views are breathtaking and the master bedroom has floor to ceiling windows so you can really appreciate them.
The pools in both houses were great. After carrying ice and beer and wine and sweating for the wedding set up it's so great to jump in the pool to cool off and relax.
It's time for us to leave now and we wish we could stay another week. Our family and friends all want to come back here every summer and that sounds like a plan to me!
Our weekend at the lodge was beautiful! We were surrounded by nature at it's best!
Our weekend at Three Hounds @ Shakespeare on the Hudson was wonderful! There were 32 of us and there was plenty of room for all of us to sleep, eat and relax comfortably. The grounds were beautiful with a perfect view and trail down to the Hudson River. We went fishing, biking and had several games of wiffle ball in the yard. The pool and hot tub were wonderful. The lodge is close to Walmart (very convenient) and several beautiful quaint towns. The lodge has a very rustic feel and met all of our needs. The bedrooms were very nice and clean. The only negative thing to say is that the main door to the house and three of the bathrooms did not have locks on the doors and at least 3 of them really need to be updated. Curtains are definitely needed in the bathroom adjoining the largest bedroom, and some of the burners on the kitchen stove did not work. I really hate to even say this, because we really did have a wonderful time. Thank you for opening your home to us !
