About Matt Weatherbee
We moved from Boston to Playa del Carmen, Mexico in 2008 and we haven't looked back since. We came originally on vacation and saw the opportunity to open a successful property management company. Within 3 months of returning from vacation we had quit our jobs, sold everything (except our condo and car) and drove 4,500 miles from Boston to Playa with our 2 miniature schnauzers. We absolutely love Mexico. The food is fantastic - we eat out often, enjoying a variety of cuisines in one of a kind establishments, most of which are within walking distance of our condo. We have formed a large circle of friends, mostly retired expats, and even host Thanksgiving with usually more than 50 attendees! For Halloween a group of 20+ friends come over, all dressed in costume and we hit 5th Avenue and hand out candy to all the children. It is the most fun day of the entire year! When we are not working, Matt enjoys working out, reading, playing bridge, cooking gourmet meals and visiting the beach. Allan enjoys watching TV, playing blackjack, eating out, going to the movies and also visiting the beach. Matt and Allan

Very nice clean apartment in a secure, safe, quiet resort
Very nice clean apartment in a secure, safe, quiet resort. Two independent bedrooms with bathrooms. Maid service every two days was nice. Very nice balcony and we loved sitting out there for coffee every morning. Although the apartment is in the 6th building from the beach, I did not think it was far or anything. Resort beach was clean, no seaweed and there was always someone who put out the umbrella and beach chairs for you (even at 10pm!!). The resort appeared to be 30% occupied so you always had beach chairs and umbrellas.
No hawkers on the beach! The sea is blue, warm and mild. I felt safe to let the kids play while we just slept. Kids loved the pool and they did not care that the water was cold. The kids used the tub in the balcony and it had hot water. 160 pesos (~10USD) away from 5th avenue. The apartment is close to the frontdesk/reception and they will hail a taxi for you to go anywhere. All taxi's in downtown know the name of the resort and they will take you back.
Next to the frontdesk/reception is a small convenience store where you can get almost anything except fresh vegetables and they accept credit cards. Deborah was very responsive to our needs.
Some of the appliances require instructions in English. We eventually figured it out. Optional concierge services provided by Deborah was good value but not great value. Wish the apartment invests in some Corelle dinnerware so they are easy on families with kids.
My con's are not really any cons. If my travels bring be to Playa Del Carmen, I will be sure to rent this apartment again. I love the place and it felt like home.

Clean and quiet
Clean and quiet. The grounds, pool, and beach were beautiful. The beachclub was nice to interact with others, have a bite to eat and grab a coctail.
Worth every dollar!
Excellent condition, clean, very modern looking and conveniently located about 5 minute walk to pool and beach.
Pool and access to beach facilities are in excellent conditions and very spacious.
Location is only a 5 minute car drive to Playa Del Carmen tourist center.
We arrived early and Matt allowed us to put our bags in the condo and grab our suits. We headed to the beach club to change and it was the perfect start to an amazing week in Playa del Carmen. We had some lunch and drinks at the Beach Club and then laid on the beach until our check in at 3 pm. The place was immaculate and better than the pictures showed!!! Everything we needed was at the condo and it was very quiet around the complex. We were pleasantly surprised by a pair of bikes to ride! We took them into town a couple times in the morning and it was one of my favorite parts of the week. The pool was so clean and the water warmed quickly during the day. It was very refreshing after spending most of the day on the beach. We never had trouble finding a spot at the pool or beach and didn't need to race to the beach before 11 am to get a chair. Cabs were easy to arrange at the front desk. We never waited more than ten minutes. They cost 160 pesos each way from the front desk. Someone mentioned them being cheaper if you left the property but we didn't mind the cost (approx 10 american dollars). Cabs were very easy to find for a ride home from town. We went to the grocery store once and had breakfast and lunch in the condo and typically went into town for dinner. We were a group of 4 women and felt safe every place we went. Deborah arranged a few day trips for us and they were fantastic! Xel-ha was a fun adventure and then we did a private boat for 4 hours that included lunch. The two man crew we had was the best I've encountered in Mexico. One of the men went in the water to snorkel with us and fed fish to 2 giant sea turtles and that experience was incredible. We were swimming in the ocean next to the turtles. He was so sweet and kind to all the sea life. We were sad to leave a week later but everything about this place was perfect!
Very nice family vacation spot!
We had a wonderful time at Mareazul! The condo was lovely, well maintained and nicely decorated with everything we needed. The kitchen was well stocked, plenty of towels (including nice beach towels), nice bed linens and even wifi. The building was set back a ways from the beach, which we didn't mind, but not really any views. Deborah, our concierge, was fantastic! She took care of every detail for us- restaurant suggestions, tickets to local parks, groceries etc. We had a broken blind and shower door and she had them both repaired in a few hours. The one complaint we had about the condo was that the jacuzzi didn't really work. There wasn't even enough hot water available to fill the bottom of the tub. We had a lot of rain while we were in Playa, and the kids would have loved using the jacuzzi. I asked Deborah about it and she mentioned that was a problem all over Playa, not just this condo.
The Mareazul property is beautiful, well manicured and maintained. We used the gym and it had nice equipment and was good sized. The pool is beautiful as well, one of the nicest I've seen. However, it was not heated and was absolutely freezing. Our kids managed to get in a few times, but lasted only a few minutes. There were numerous "hot tubs" throughout the pool area, and unfortunately they were as cold as the pool! I must say that was extremely disappointing. The beach, however, was beautiful! Nice chairs and plenty of umbrellas, and the seaweed was cleaned up every morning. The ocean water was much warmer than the pools. We had a great time at the beach. It is very quiet and private. There is a small beach club just a short walk away, but I don't recommend it. It was very worn out, you can tell it was beautiful back in the day, but now it is literally falling apart. We had one meal there as I was a bit tired of cooking, the food was ok, full bar though.
The drive to Playa is about 10 minutes, but you really see the unpleasant side of Playa along the way. I was pleased that we had security at the entrance to Grand Coral and again at Mareazul. Pretty rough looking right outside the gates. We rented a car while in Playa and we liked having it to get to groceries. However, parking in Playa is next to impossible. Very few parking garages, and almost no street parking. We did find a parking lot that sometimes had space attached to the mall. The shops and restaurants are fun, lots to do in downtown. Overall we had a great time.
The apartment it is in perfect conditions, the pool and the amenities are very clean and modern. The beach is amazing and very near from the apartment. There a lot to things to do in the condo and also in Playa del Carmen. We recomend a lot the place.
