About the host

Host profile image
My husband, Adam, and I grew up in Indiana. Our shared passion for travel took us around the world, with longer stays in Seattle, Los Angeles, Hawaii, and Florida. I am a geologist turned Naturopathic Doctor, and Adam is a Mechanical Engineer who used to work in the aerospace industry. We both have a passion for diving into the inner workings of everything. Currently, we are raising our daughter, renovating the homes on our property, and building a sustainable lifestyle.

We are hosting in order to bring as many people as possible to experience the serenity and beauty preserved in our home. This estate has been tucked away for years; many in the neighborhood didn’t even know it was here! This is such a shame and a waste of this amazing place. With the spread of urbanization, it is an honor to be tasked with becoming a steward of nature as well as sharing it with others who wish to escape the cities for a grounding respite from the stresses of daily life.

Why they chose this property

After living on the West Coast and in Florida, we wanted to find a place with a low risk of wildfire, drought, and hurricanes. We loved the mountains with plenty of fresh flowing water, so the foothills of the Appalachians were very appealing. In the end, the property chose us. We had been browsing properties from afar with our parents, and this one popped up once and was on our radar. They happened to be in the area visiting friends and asked if we remembered the address. It was no longer listed for sale, but we did manage to track it down. Upon arriving at the front gate, there was an auction sign for the next day! They showed up and were one of two people to bid on it, and we got it! Our lack of due diligence was slightly concerning as we started our journey here, but the rich history and pristine wilderness have won us over. The last 4 years have truly been a labor of love to bring this place back to its former glory.

The proximity to the Rumbling Bald Resort is also very nice. Most rural properties are very rural, but here you can take a nice long walk or a quick golf cart ride and get a fresh baked pizza with a beautiful view of the lake!

What makes this property unique

When we purchased this property in 2019, we had no idea of its rich history. The cabin at the beginning of the driveway was built in 1860 and was one of the first homes in the Lake Lure area with its true history lost to time. From the early 1940’s onward the history of this estate is very well documented thanks to Leslie Cheek Jr, the son of the founder of Maxwell house coffee. He was also the founder of the fine arts department at William and Mary college and first director of the Biltmore Museum of Art and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Inspired by his parent’s renowned home the “Cheekwood Estate” in Tennessee he bought 5,000 acres around Lake Lure, including this property and most of the north and east perimeters of Lake Lure. He proceeded to build his Frank Lloyd Wright inspired homes and barns. In the mid 1950’s his commuting to Virginia became a burden and he decided to sell a portion of the vast acreage and donate the rest in a land trust to the state. Rolland King, a successful real estate developer from Florida, bought the property and became a prominent figure of Lake Lure town. He was the founder and developer of the Rumbling Bald Resort & golf course.

We are striving to maintain and revitalize the vision of Leslie Cheek Jr., to make this property modern and sustainable while fusing it into the natural landscape, and above all preserving the natural beauty of the area.
