About Melanie Dennis
My husband and I have lived in the mountains of Colorado for the last 20+ years, and we love the adventures and beauty of a mountain lifestyle. Together we own a construction company, called Fiddler Creek Company (online at the same name), and we specialize in the construction of timber framed and 'green' homes. We built our off-grid home in 2003, and have lived there up through 2011, when we moved to the town of Minturn to be closer to schools for our kids. We are happy to share our house with you through VRBO. We use our house when it's not rented, as we enjoy the hiking, skiing, biking and the solace of the location. Melanie Dennis is a licensed real estate broker in the state of Colorado.
Melanie Dennis purchased this House in 1997
Why Melanie Dennis chose Eagle County
We bought our 12 acre property back in 1997, after an extensive search through Colorado, looking for a property that was both close to amenities and community, and also offered us the experiences of the backcountry. We were also looking for a place to build our own home. This property accomplished this perfectly for us. We are nestled in the mountains between Vail and Leadville, can easily ski at Cooper, Copper, Vail, or the Summit County areas as well. In the summer there are numerous rivers for rafting, and there is awesome hiking and biking without having to drive.
What makes this House unique
Our neighborhood is surrounded by National Forest with recreational opportunities everywhere. While only being 10 short miles to Leadville, it feels like you're many more miles into the wilderness. In an hour's hike from the front door, you can be standing on top of Taylor Hill, with 360 degree views, and not a sole in sight, except perhaps, for a roaming herd of elk or a soaring red tail hawk. Or, in a 5 minute's drive you can be at Ski Cooper or the Tennessee Pass Nordic Center. For the more adventurous, you can ski/hike the 3-4 miles instead. In the 1800s, our property was in a gold and silver mining area. As you explore the surrounding forest you can sometimes find remnants of a bygone era, like a broken down miner's cabin or tin can, that has been rusting for over 100 years.

Beautiful, peaceful retreat
Our family enjoyed every aspect of this incredible home near Ski Cooper. The setting is peaceful, quiet, secluded and tranquil. The house was built with outstanding craftsmanship by the owners themselves and was the perfect cozy, off grid getaway for our spring break ski trip.
Perfect summer stay
The house and setting are beyond believable. We stayed pretty much the month of July. We mostly did outdoor activities like hiking, mountain biking, 4WD and kayaking. El Capitan was a great home base for these activities. But it was also wonderful to recoup at home. If you're going for an extended stay, consider bringing a pressure cooker. I did at Melanie's suggestion and used it tons (no electric appliances like microwave, electric coffee pot, crockpot, dishwasher). I loved that it was green (solar!). The water was fabulous (well water!). On demand hot water for showers. I felt like we were living in a fairy tale house. Melanie and Greg were terrific hosts and just a phone call away. Reliable internet, no cell service ("land line" though, for incoming calls and local calls). Some of us could text if the internet was on. I want to go back in winter and get snowed in!
The property was secluded, just what we wanted. No tv, no distractions, just great family time! Minutes from Ski Cooper. While the road was steep, it was no problem for a 4x4.
Beautiful roomy cabin in a gorgeous location
This cabin is utterly gorgeous and was designed and personally built by the owner. It is full of charming details, like painted tiles and sinks and arched doorways. It was very clean and comfortable. When we woke up and saw the knock-out view, we liked it even better. The cabin has everything you need (games, warm beds, a big soft couch, sleds, snowshoes, fully-stocked kitchen), and the owners even laid a fire for us. Our kids spent about 3 hours sledding on the property, while we drank tea by the fire. Melanie and Greg were responsive, local, and gracious, and we even got to meet them, as they were skiing up behind their property. It was very close to Ski Cooper/Tennessee Pass/Leadville, while feeling a million miles from anyone. I could have spent the winter there!
Two cautionary notes:
1)This cabin is off-grid, meaning no TV, no microwave, probably no cell service (ours didn't work), and most of the heat comes from the wood stoves. We loved this, but it might not be for everyone.
2) The road up to the cabin is in good shape, but dirt and rather steep. We have an all-wheel drive SUV that usually does fairly well in city snow, but we DEFINITELY needed our snow chains. I suspect any car could make it up in the summer, but you may want to consider this if you're visiting in the winter.
We hope to come back! It was really a great visit. Thank you Melanie & Greg!
Love this Unique Cabin!
This cabin is not just a place to stay, but an amazing experience. We loved the wood stoves and all the attention to detail with this cabin. It is amazing fun for kids and adults both! Great family time spent with no tv! We visited in the winter and the wood stoves and gas back up heat kept us cozy and warm. This is a dream house!
Plus very close to Ski Cooper Resort, great small ski resort that we loved as well!
Charming and relaxing
Beautiful home with glorious Mountain View. A great place to stay!
