First Maui vacation with family of 5
This was our first Maui vacation with my three children ages 12 through 7 staying for 7 nights. Highlight of the trip was the condo we have chosen. We initially asked for 801 which was booked out and got 808 instead. This turned out to be better deal since 808 incorporated lanai into the living room making living space larger. Condo was recently remodeled with modern appliances that worked well. As soon as we arrived, we had breathtaking 180 degree view of the ocean which was very impressive. Condo was closer to ocean than all other resorts and condos in the area. Looking out the windows, sometimes we felt like we were on a ship. There were some negatives including too soft pillows, corners of shower stall not immaculately cleaned, and AC cooler in bedroom than living room. However, they were I felt minor annoyance and positives far outweighs negative. Condo office staff were very nice and responsive and couple of items that did not work in condo was fixed within 12 hours.
Now some pointers. I would not bother going to beach north of condo since there are shallow rocks and not pleasant to swim nor snorkel. As a reference from Black Rock to Maui Kai, closer half is better for snorkeling since there are still some sharp rocks and not all sands. Snorkeling is great here as good as anywhere else in Maui. Farther half is ideal for swimming with little kids since they are all sands. I used Boss Frog, and price was good with Snorkeling gear for 1 week for 3 people, one boogie board, Luau (which was fantastic) for 5, and snorkeling boat trip (which was better than I expected) all costing about $350. Of course, there was about $100-150 discount for going on Diamond Resort tour (which I would skip and pay extra due to high sales pitch). With children, I would go to Napili Beach which had better waves for little ones to enjoy and great snorkeling (I saw school of 100-150 fish). Kapalua Beach was also great for snorkeling with lot of fish and turtle. (Don't touch the turtle). Stock up on food at Costco upon arrival. We filled the refrigerator from costco, but we wished that we bought at least 2 watermelons and 3 pineapple which were much cheaper at costco which went quickly. Make good use of subway and McDonald nearby. Park in Kahekili Beach Park nearby for access to sandy beach for swimming and at sunset to walk the footpath towards Westin Hotel (not beach) for view of sunset.
