About Tony and Julia Whetton
Tony and Julia met whilst serving in the Royal Navy over 30 years ago and now live on the edge of Dartmoor in Devon. We spend 6-8 weeks at Monte Lagello in the early Summer as well as Spring and Autumn visits.
Tony and Julia Whetton purchased this Castle in 2003
Why Tony and Julia Whetton chose Collazzone
After visiting many parts of Italy we fell in love with Umbria and when staying near Todi found Monte Lagello and knew straight away it was the right place for us as our second home. There is so much history to the castle and it has been beautifully restored. The swimming pool surrounded by olive trees with endless views over the Tiber valley towards Assisi and the Sibellini Mountains is wonderful. We love the peace and tranquility of the place and it is a privilege to be able to stay in such a beautiful historic building. We also enjoy the proximity to so many of the treasures of Umbria such as Perugia, Todi, Assisi, Orvieto and numerous unspoilt hill towns as well as Lake Trasimeno. We also enjoy venturing further afield into Tuscany and Le Marche and occasionally as far as Rome or either coast
What makes this Castle unique
Having viewed several apartments in the castle we realised No12 had everything we wanted; our visitors agree that the private roof terrace with views over the castle roofs and surrounding hills is unique and is the perfect place to eat or relax any time of day and at night you are under the canopy of stars. The big patio doors mean that the living area is very light and we have equipped the apartment for easy everyday living with a well equipped kitchen - I am a keen cook so enjoy preparing meals there. Although is WiFi available in the Club House and by the pool we are one of the few apartments with wifi available throughout.

Lovely apartment in stunning 1000 year old castle
Monte Lagello is a stunning converted castle in a beautiful location. The views of the Umbrian countryside are outstanding. The swimming pool is a real bonus with its lovely terrace for sunbathing. It is a place for peace and quiet.
It is off the beaten track so a car is a must. The shops are about six miles away. The owners provided excellent directions from Rome. The staff at the property were friendly and helpful. There are myriad, fascinating places to visit within a 40-60 minute drive of the property.
The apartment is well appointed with everything that is needed for a comfortable stay. As described the apartment is suitable for two adults plus children, rather than two adult couples.
We are so pleased that this couple appreciate the delights of Monte Lagello and our apartment where we provide all that is needed for a comfortable stay. It really is a magical place. The apartment is extremely well equipped and guests find the unique roof terrace aquifer haven for al fresco meals and being able to use WiFi in the apartment a real bonus.
Although the second (twin) bedroom is small it has a high ceiling and we have maximised the space so there is plenty of storage for clothes and other possessions; adult couples have stayed there very comfortably, and frequently return.
We look forward to welcoming this couple back.
Lovely apartment with stunning views
Lovely, comfortable apartment in a beautiful castle with amazing views. We spent a blissful week here enjoying the beautiful but tranquil countryside. Our two young children enjoyed the pool so much, it was hard to leave the castle but, if you can tear yourself away from the pool and the amazing views, there is a lot to do in the surrounding area. Julia and Tony's apartment was like a home away from home and we felt very comfortable and at ease. We would love to return!
We are delighted that his young family enjoyed our second home so much; we have spoken with them and they wished they'd stayed longer. We try and ensure that you are comfortable and there is everything you need for day to day living. We look forward to welcoming them back. We do offer a discount for returners.
What a wonderful place!
I'm so glad we settled on Tony and Julia's apartment in Monte Lagello, the place is fantastic, homely and welcoming. We settled in straightaway. There's many a fine view in Umbria but once we'd climbed the 'white road' in our little hire car to the castle at the top of the hill and stood looking across the valleys to the Apennines all you can really say is 'amazing'. Any stress you thought you brought with you will leave you right there. Two big plus points, it's sooo quiet. We could hear the lizard walking around in the flower pots at breakfast. And two it's far enough away from anywhere that at night the sky is clear and dark and the view of the stars is fantastic. We were lucky enough to be there around the time of the Perseid meteor shower and saw several streak across the sky. In practical terms we were there with two teenagers and had plenty of space for them to sleep and flop around. The apartment had everything we needed, maybe grab some pool toys if you have little ones. The pool is wonderful but if you can drag yourself away there are great things to do, see and eat in the area, but really coming back to the castle is the biggest kick of all.
We would like to thank this family for choosing our apartment and taking the time to write this review; it is hard to express the magic of the place in words but they have done so. They seemed to love it there as much as we do and we look forward to welcoming them back.
A castle in the hills
We received a very warm welcome from Julia and Julia. The apartment is located in a renovated castle and has all the facilities you could need. A pot, pan or coffee pot for every occasion The views are amazing from the terrace. God wifi in the flat too.
The shared pool is peaceful and quiet with panaoramic views over the rolling Umbrian countryside. There is even a boules court among the olive grove that surrounds the pool and the castle. A good location for walking or cycling in the hills.
The flat worked really well for 2 adults and a child of 10.
Tony and I were pleased to meet this charming family when they arrived at Monte Lagello; we always like to ensure our guests receive a warm welcome and are shown round, usually by Maria or Ilario, the onsite caretaker. Monte Lagello is our second home and very special to us, so it is well supplied for day to day living; we are very glad we decided to extend the WiFi so that it works throughout our apartment and not just in public areas. The master bedroom is very spacious and although the second bedroom is small it has a high ceiling so feels airy and with plenty of storage and hanging space available it also comfortably accommodates 2 adults.
We are so glad they enjoyed their stay, are grateful for them for taking the time to write this review and look forward to welcoming them again soon.

Charming apartment bursting with character
Lovely apartment with delightful roof terrace. The pool was peaceful with stunning views over the olive groves and surrounding countryside. A good base from which to explore the area with its many hilltop villages and fabulous eateries.
We are delighted these guests enjoyed our apartment , the castle and its location so much and appreciated They took the time to write a review. They have stayed several times and we look forward to welcoming them back.
Set in the rolling Umbrian hills, Monte Lagello is perfectly located for exploring the lovely art and architecture of the ancient hilltowns. Perugia, capital of Umbria is just 30 minutes away, Assisi, Orvieto and Todi less than 1 hour. Further afield famous towns and cities such as Florence, Siena, Gubbio, Spello and Rome can each be visited in a day. The surrounding countryside is ideal for walking, picnicking and mountain-biking and there is horse riding and golf available locally. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy water sports at nearby Lake Trasimeno. For shopping Marsciano is only 20 mins away, where there are all amenities and a railway station. Locally the pretty village of Spina has a supermarket, butchers, bank, pharmacy and cantina for Umbrian wine. There are many excellent local restaurants and everywhere there are cafes with outdoor terraces to sit and watch the world go by. Access is easy with Rome airports 2 hours away and Ryanair now fly to Perugia.
