About Mary Shields
I am retired from the world of education and now able to concentrate on what I love best-finding new projects that allow me to use my various DIY skills to repurpose or find new purpose in things around me. I love to garden and work with stained glass, sew and read and even make soap and lotion. Now that I have land to play with, I have even established a vegetable garden that goes beyond patio tomatoes! I have come a long way from Kirkland, Illinois across more world wide byways than I could have imagined. But that would be a story for over a glass of wine!
Mary Shields purchased this Cabin in 2014
Why Mary Shields chose Grants Pass
My home was built in the 1950's and used as a fishing retreat by Hollywood actors including Howard Duff and Ida Lupino. It was built to last in a workman's fishing camp style. The care taken by the builder is evident in the detail work done on cabinets and desks. Unfortunately it had been abandoned for four years prior to my purchasing it. My son and I have been working to revive the grounds, refresh the buildings and still maintain the vintage charm that makes it such a wonderful place to share with family and friends. I love to contemplate what life was like when Rock Hudson, Doris Day, John Wayne and others came to play and party right here where I live. Oh the stories that this old house could tell!
What makes this Cabin unique
The barn wood walls tell the story of the floods that have fashioned the Rogue into what it is today. I awake to the call of the wild turkeys, watch the deer amble through the yard and hope they aren't so hungry that they will sample even those plants rated as deer resistant! Every day the river is there bringing a sense of calm and the promise of something new to experience for me and each rafter and fishermen on the river that day. It is a life lived outside or snuggled up with a book in front of the fire, full of hard work or long dreamy hours, of Tom Sawyer days with no agenda or opportunities to explore the many activities available in the surrounding towns and country side,

We stayed two nights and liked it.
It was small, as advertised, so that was fine. We expected to spend most of our time in the backyard by the river. But the river was not exactly in our backyard. It is down the path, between two other houses and in somebody else's backyard. We still spend a good deal of time there, but the convenience was less than expected.
A couple of things in the cabin did not work. We contacted Chris and his dog Tommy. They were always friendly and helpful.
The Rookery is excellent!
Very easy to rent. Lovely quiet place. Great to your coffee and go sit by the river in the morning, glass of wine in the evening. Loved everything about this place. If you want to close to hustle and bustle this isn't the pkace for you. But if you want quiet country its perfect!
Nice and quiet!
No traffic, no WiFi, no phones or cell phones and no TV! A Very quiet stay in a peaceful setting with easy access to the river! Loved it! The lack of electronics can be both a blessing and a curse - if you really need to, walk down to the main house and you will have WiFi. Sit on the porch in the evening and enjoy yourself, truly a gem! If you want to get away from it for a while - this is the place to do it
Anniversary R & R
We wanted a place where we could just kick back and relax. The whole site was pretty private and was just what we needed. We really enjoyed playing in the river every afternoon. The owner was very gracious.
Loved the cabin in Grants Pass. A nice change of pace to be without WiFi or cell service for a couple of days. Everything was clean and tidy when we arrived. Several wineries in the area and don’t miss the Oregon Caves National Monument tour.
Wonderful reprieve - good for the soul!
This little gem is a wonderful place to get away from the daily stress. Thoughtfully decorated, high quality mattress, bedding, and linens. Luxurious handcrafted soap, well stocked kitchen. A short walk to the river, where we ate many of our meals taking in the natural beauty of this quiet and comfortable retreat.
From this location it is a day trip to visit Crater Lake, Oregon Caves, Big Cats, Wild Life Images. There are many wineries in the area that offer tours and tasting, lavender farms and a zip line course.
